Financial Responsibilities for new Midshipmen

USMMA - LaGuardia is the closest, but JFK works as well. Amtrak to Penn Station in NYC and then the LIRR to Great Neck will also get you to Kings Point.

Yellow cab from JFK to the Anchor inn was 30.50.
The "limo" to the academy from the Hotel was 30.00 !!! outrageous....

Most if not all the academies require an initial payment of around $3000 or so. This covers initial expenses such as computer, uniforms, etc. Once they get to the academy of choice, expenses include travel to and from home and the usual personal expenses such as snacks, movies, trips to the mall. Of course the first year especially at USNA there are limited opportunities for these. Also, the mid/cadet receives a small salary that covers some of this. The big thing I would say is travel.

Look, our country is going through a very difficult time, right now. Times have changed since many of the alumni posters, on this forum, have graduated from the Naval Academy. When I last spoke with my regional rep from admissions, he told me I could drop my son off in his underwear and they would take care of the rest. Thanks Uncle Sam! You're the best! I even went out to buy new underwear for the special event. :shake::yllol::shake:

Hiya! Question for all you parents!

Will USNA pay for one parent to fly out with me for I-day? They've offered to pay for one to fly with me to the CVW next month, but as I would like to go it alone, they're wondering if they can reap the same benefit when it's time for me to leave for real.

I fly United almost exclusively, I've never flown on Southwest. I see the madhouse that is the new "A" terminal at BWI every time I fly (very crowded).

For the "forgotten" academies:

USCGA - Hartford or Providence are your choices for airports, although they both are about 1 hour away. The New London/Groton airport is not a commercial airport. The Amtrak station is right in New London, very easy.

USMMA - LaGuardia is the closest, but JFK works as well. Amtrak to Penn Station in NYC and then the LIRR to Great Neck will also get you to Kings Point.

A couple of thoughts on these lines. I too am a frequent traveler and was quite skeptical about Southwest and "the madhouse". That said the reality is the Southwest System is different for boarding planes at BWI Terminal A and though it looks crazier it works smoother and more importantly it works. Finally because of Southwest, tickets into BWI vice Philly, Reagan National or Dulles tend to be considerably cheaper than the alternatives.

For either USMMA or even USCGA don't discount or forget about Newark. You can easily get to Newark from Penn Station New York on New Jersey Transit Trains.

Then As noted to then get to USMMA you just get on the Long Island railroad Commuter Rait to Great Neck (~20 minutes).

To get the USCCGA, I guess the connections need to be better timed but you get on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor that serves New London/Groton at Penn Station as well. The Northeast Regional runs during the business day every hour or two and runs ~$50.00 one way so that might be chaper than flying in to hartford or Providence though Southwest now serves Providence

Welcome to NY - If you are spending a couple of days there as you might when you're bringing your DS/DD to report for Indoctrination, it's generally worth it to rent a car as Cabs on Long Island can be a costly option - on that note make sure you then stay somewhere that doesn't charge for parking or at least you know how much that will cost you per night.
