Fire near Colorado Springs

Navy83

We were at the Hampton Inn on Commerce Drive just off of Woodman and I-25. We were evacuated at 6 pm today. Needed to scramble to find a hotel in Pueblo. Couldn't find one anywhere around Denver or between Denver and CO Springs. After we were given the order to evacuate it took us over an hour to just move the quarter mile between the hotel and I-25.

The winds were very high today and therefore the fire was unfortunately able to make significant progress. It sounds like the winds could be high tomorrow again!

Commandant said there was no way that they would let the fire get this close. They have an entire station devoted to the cadet area.

Even without the fire itself being in the cadet area, couldn't the air quality there pose a problem?

In-processing

At this time, cadet in-processing is still scheduled for Thursday, however the reporting location has changed to the Cadet Field House instead of Doolittle Hall. Appointees should report at their previously scheduled report time. All appointees should enter the Academy through the North Gate to access the Cadet Field House.

New cadet in-processing

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo., - Approximately 1,000 Air Force Academy cadet appointees are expected to arrive in the area for in-processing, which is currently scheduled for Thursday morning. Air Force Academy officials want to assure the public that there is a plan in place to take care of all cadets, to include appointees.

Bed and Breakfast host families, who plan to meet their appointees on the Academy, are asked to meet their appointees at the Cadet Field House instead of Doolittle Hall at the originally scheduled time. In addition, cadet appointees arriving at the airport whose Bed and Breakfast families have been impacted by the evacuation will receive instructions at the airport from Association of Graduate members, who will be identified as such.

Any changes or updates on in-processing and cadet appointee reporting instructions will be posted on the USAFA Web page, www.usafa.af.mil. Click on the "Waldo Canyon Fire" tab.

Check in site for Thursday Changed

Check out your status page...check in is on as planned for Thursday except the location has been changed from Doolittle Hall to Cadet Field House.

Son said AFA officials have decided not to evac the cadets at this time. Back on pre-evac mode.

Confirming aggie83 comments. DD is still in Vandy at this hour and there is no evacuation order. Fire has quieted down since the 6 p.m. time frame. I am no longer in my motel but at DD sponsor house. What wonderful people they are!

Just out of curiosity, if the fires reach the academy, where will we go during the school year?

Keep in mind the size of the US Air Force Academy (18,500 acres). The fires could "reach the academy" yet still be miles from the cadets.

The entire academy "campus" is so large, the other 4 academies combined could all fit inside of it. The cadet area is just a very small part of the place.

AFA = 18,500 acres
WP = 15,000 acres
NA = 338 acres
CGA = 110 acres
KP = 92 acres

I'm just wondering what I have to do with my stuff... I have a lot of my stuff still in the enlisted dorm, and we were evacuated. If we don't get let back in before i day, what will happen to all that? Will i Getty the opportunity to go back and finish packing it and put it in storage?

Any ideas on viewing cadets taking the oath?

As of now the Academy is closed to visitors. Unless that changes, parents, friends, and family will be unable to watch their sons and daughters during any part of the process. It's unfortunate, but these are very unusual and very difficult circumstances.

I disagree for in proccessing that is why the field house is being used instead of doolittle so they can be inside and more secure

We were just turned away from entering the north gate. Limited entry, only mission essential personell allowed. Admissions just updated us that in-processing as of noon today is still as scheduled tomorrow at the Cadet Field House instead of Doolittle Hall. We were directed to check web portal in case there's new development. There's a little bit of a drizzle that we pray would be enough to douse the flames.

I think they are being very cautious not knowing what this afternoon's winds might bring and where that will take the fire so they are giving evacs and pre-evacs in numerous directions. Oh how a flood would be good now (i know the runoff would be bad in burned areas but there has to be some help in controlling the spread of the fire).

DD and I spent last night at the Rampart Lodge, just a ridge line away from the USAFA dorms. We were told to check out this morning (I believe they want to get non-essential personnel off base). There is no smoke here, but the air smells of fire and smoke. That will probably the first thing appointees will notice Thursday morning when they report.
