Just getting teary as I read posts from newly appointed mids and cadets. Parents that are booking one way tickets. Deep breath!

Today my plebe turns 19 and it's his first birthday I have not baked cupcakes or pulled my hair out while 20 little guys are playing football in my front yard.

He received his computer monitor from Best Buy yesterday and the cookie cake arrives today.

I am so very proud of him since it sounds as if his Plebe year has been very succesful. But if I could wiggle my nose and beam me up, I would give anything for a hug from my baby.

You receive mountains of paperwork, tons of advice, but the one thing you are not prepared for is that ache in your heart.

Sniff sniff!
I'm already trying to prepare myself for my baby's (who is also a plebe) 19th b'day in May!

Hey parents...

When I headed to Northwestern Prep (in 1978 it was in Mound, MN) I had my first birthday away from mom.

EVERY birthday she made me her "sour cream pound cake" and I LOVE it!! :worship:

So there I was in Mound, MN...and on my birthday this HUGE box arrived. So my roommates and I thought: "What the ???"

So I opened it and it smelled of...popcorn! Another of my most favorite foods. There was this HUGE "lawn and leaf" bag in this box (I said it was a HUGE box)...with a note (in my father's hand...he and I always did popcorn together): "OPEN THIS FIRST!" So I did...it was FILLED with fresh (well a couple days old but popcorn is sorta like a twinkie) salted popcorn!!!

YUM!!! :popcorn1:

And while we munched...we found this BIG "aluminum foil wrapped package" and it was CLEAR by the Bundt pan shape...

It was a POUND CAKE!!! :yay:

And a note was attached...

"You didn't think I'd forget, did you?"
(yep, in mom's handwriting)

That was in 1978.

I received a pound cake on every birthday from that year until 2008, no matter where I was. I had one delivered in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield, and many other places around the world. Sadly it ended when I lost my mom to cancer in 2009.

My birthday cake from 2008 lasted until 2010.

Just because "they're" not at home, doesn't mean you can't still have that connection.

I had it for 31 years, 30 in uniform. Could it have been any better? :thumb:

Great story, Steve! I send a German choc cake to other college age son, but used Graul's in Annapolis for mid son. I think my mid will get the German choc one from mom next year as well.

My son's birthday was two days ago. Since they're closing in on Recognition, he didn't want me to send anything that would draw attention to him, especially after some "extra" attention during a beat session last Saturday when some of the upperclass found out his birthday was coming up. So I promised him that I'd order him a cake that he could receive a week from Monday, after recognition was all over.

He posted on FB that his roomie had gotten him a Zebra "cake" - one of the individually packaged snack cakes, along with a donut and a can of Coke to celebrate! When I called him briefly that evening, I told him to tell his roomie thank you for "taking care of my baby". He relayed the message to him, then told me his roomie said to tell me back "Don't worry - I've got your back!" :shake:

great stories! I wish i could send the homemeade cupcakes to son from shanghai.....but....well first of all I would need to find a muffin tin!

It's now Saturday here and son emailed that his 22" monitor is up and running just fine! Hopefully he will rate media soon.

thanks

So glad I read this thread this evening. My baby girl's 18th birthday is in a few days and I know it will be our last one together for the next few years at least. Your messages have reminded me to cherish these moments. Poor girl is going to get smothered and pampered to death. Thanks for sharing.

My birthday was during BCT, no telling how my mom felt ha

You are so right to cherish these days. They will go by so fast. My DS had his 18th birthday away from home and he did not even have phone privileges yet. We just missed another birthday as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas for the first time while DS was at sea. Everyone has to make special memories while they can to cherish when you have to be apart. It is a very emotional time for everyone involved. DS's older brother just deployed for the first time with Force Recon. I am an emotional wreck and only near constant prayer gets me through the days. I cannot even go in their room without tearing up. I tell my kids to look within and I will always be a part of them wherever they go even if we are not together. Now if I could only follow my own advice...

kpmom2103.... Every single DS and DD on this blog feels like a member of my family. Your son will always be in my prayers. And as I'm sure he's been adopted by everyone here, the prayers will flow 24/7, so give yourself a moment off, and let us fill in....

Thank you singaporemom. I am off the ledge now. It is such a comfort to be on this forum and find people who truly understand. All the best to you and your family as well!

What would I do without this group of people? This week I have been feeling kind of down as we have been getting some text messages saying that things have been pretty tough this week for our plebe son. He too will turn 19 in April and it is really heartwarming to see all of you going through the same emotions I was feeling today. I have been pretty good this year being so far away, but for some reason, this week kind of tested me. Thanks to all for sharing your stories. I know that our kids are in good hands.

loving this post------waiting to see which blocks DS has this summer. It is looking like he will be on a sub for his 19th birthday----help me figure out how to get a cake to him will ya?!!

Good questions, BHM! Maybe you could show up in a scuba suit! We are also anxiously awaiting news of the summer blocks. Thanks again for this great thread. It has really lifted my spirits today.

Happy Birthday DS

you guys kill me--love the suggestion singaporemom --now how do we find out which part of the ocean i scuba to.

A couple summers ago, a parent on here told of their kiddo being one of 15 mids to meet up with their sub for summer cruise off of Florida. Sub had surfaced to get the mids. Sailors (is that what they call them?) on sub were coming out the hatch and swimming in the clear water .....BHMom, you could just jet up in a speedboat!
