You guys are going to love this one. We got word today that you will be notified that you got a scholarship offer in person by the closest ROTC Battalion. We have until 4 December to go to all the scholarship winners house present the big check in their living room. Until that is done the letter will not go out and the status won't change. Would love to hear what applicants think about how this is being done.

If you were boarded this round you may want to contact the ROO at your school of choice and ask. In my case I will probably let the non winners know at this point to stop stressing and stand by for the second round.

From reading the other threads, it looks like some schools aren't following directions and maybe the SMCs are doing things differently, but for the folks that are following orders Cadre are putting on their dress uniforms and heading out with Big checks. Be prepared to receive a call from the ROOs to coordinate a time to have us come to the house.

I appreciate the notification, would it be wrong to ask your first choice school for the results? Or to contact the closest ROTC battalion? I don't want to annoy the busy people at the Universities.

Thanks for the update.

Wow. Thats very interesting. Thank you for the update..
Now for me, I am current a military dependent and live in Sasebo, Japan. There really isn't a "closest" school, although I have received scholarship emails from Virginia Tech and Ohio State. Would it be appropriate to contact these schools and ask about the results? Since I doubt anyone will be coming all the way to Sasebo to award some big check, if I did receive the scholarship.

Recommend everyone stand by for about a week. If you are getting an offer then someone will contact you to arrange the visit. If you don't hear from anyone in about a week I would recommend shooting the ROO at your school of choice an email asking about your status.

Keep in mind this is a brand new procedure so I'm sure things like presenting to the winner from Japan would be just a few of the challenges to be solved. Be patient.

This makes me very uncomfortable...to potentially have them come to my home with a giant check. I can't imagine how awkward it would be all around. Should I invite them in for refreshments? I live in a populous state, and we are still a drive of over an hour from the nearest ROTC college.

Just a question here. So if they do this now, does that mean come senior awards night they will not be coming out to do the big check/speech?

I would think most parents and kids would rather it be that night in front of their peers instead of a private ceremony.

Also, for me, I feel for people like Clarkson. Typically parents work and kids are in school during their duty day. Thus, that means even if they only 3 or 4 with each board, that is 3 or 4 days of working past their duty day, or maybe working on Sat./Sun. to award the giant checks.

I wouldn't even want to be the person at a place like here in No VA if they are going to send them out from the nearest unit. There are a ton of kids that apply in state, especially, UVA, VCU, JMU, VT and GMU, however if you live in Fairfax or Prince William County GMU is by far the closest unit.
~ If they pull them from VCU, JMU or UVA, it is still a solid hour drive to this area. 2 hours round trip for someone like Clarkson.

I have no bone in this issue, but I wonder how this will shake out from both sides of the fence.

I know in our house we just want to know. I love the idea of a formal presentation taking place during Senior Awards instead of a home visit, but right now we'd be happy with a single word change on the website!

Well will my status be updated on the site? I also hope they dont do this for the other boards because I really want my friends and school mates to see this moment of my life

The idea has some charm. A couple of years ago a cadet at the Citadel was here advocating this sort of personal approach. As I recall, he suggested delivering the offer in a leather-bound folio. If you are using a giant styrofoam check, you may need an entire cowhide.

But our dog doesn't really care for strangers, especially if y0u are trying to deliver something. Whatever you do, don't leave the ceremonial check on the floor or he will mark it in triumph.

Austin...would love to know how you found out.

Pima...one of the tasks associated with this visit is to coordinate the subsequent awards night presentation. And don't feel sorry for me. I don't wear the uniform anymore, so my PMS or one of the teaching Cadre will be stuck making the drive, probably after hours.

Can't help but think of the yellow cab notifications portrayed in "We Were Soldiers Once" but with a positive spin. Will this devolve into something like that?

Will there be a balloon bouquet and a camera crew like Publishers' Clearinghouse?

By all means, let's make our kids feel more special.

So Cadet Command has decided it is better to have the cadre, including the PMS usually Lt. Col, expend what "extra time" they may have traveling to make potential AROTC cadets (and their parents) feel good about themselves, as opposed to working with the current cadets in their battalion, including soon to be new 2nd Lts., or Juniors who will now be relying more on PMS reviews for order of merit.

I say potential AROTC scholarship winners because they have not accepted AROTC; nor passed DODMERB; and may not even be going to that cadre's school. Will they be doing this for all three boards?

What about the water walkers who are multiple ROTC winners, who may want to be really courted? Will they try to have the AROTC representative show up same time as NROTC and AFROTC reps (if those programs ever decided to do such a process) and have a throw down?

Heard stories that the new Cadet Command was a kindler gentler command.

My friend got an email from University of Miami telling him that he was awarded a 4 year. Miami isnmt even a top 3 choice for him so I'm sure his other schools are waiting until Cadet Command releases the official notifications. I'm still waiting/hoping to hear from my schools.
