Got confirmation today from one school they will do the in person award by Dec 4 and a formal letter if selected at first board. Status still says boarded on website.

Our local battalion (not among my son's choices) just called him directly on his cell and told him he'd been selected for a scholarship. They indicated they did not know if it was 3 or 4 years and they did not know to which school(s). My son is to meet the representative in the high school counseling center at noon. I'm happy to know and have the result, but it would have been nice for the parent to have been looped in!

I think it depends on what phone number your son filled in on his application. My son put our home number and not his cell number.

tjb1975...where do you live? I'd be interested to know which battalion called. We've not heard a peep, only an email from his number 1 early last week that results would be out soon and to watch the portal.

We live in McLean County, IL, near Bloomington-Normal. It was the Illinois State University Redbirds Battalion that called. This is indeed the battalion that is nearest to our home. The caller indicated they did not know the details of the scholarship or to which school(s) it would be offered. After my son called me I emailed the recruiter at ISU. He said he would just be presenting a certificate to us tomorrow and that an official offer would be coming in the mail sometime in the next month. I'm guessing it is after this official letter is sent that the portal will be changed. And when the letter is sent, is that when the 30 day acceptance period begins? This is a weird system...I guess you only hear something if you have been chosen, but even among those that have been chosen there are many discrepancies in the process. Regardless, I am very thankful for the opportunity for my son. He is dedicated to an army career.

I would take that as a good sign!

Congratulations to you and your son on the scholarship offer. The 30 days should begin on the transmittal date which appears in the letter (not the day you receive it).

By the way, get used to not being in the loop. Once he turns 18, unless the Army and his school have his written permission, you're entitled to know zilch.

I suppose that's how it should be, but that's difficult!

He is 18 already, BTW, so maybe that's why they called him directly.

No biggie. We'll make some room in the helicopter for you.

KeyzCat, that's a good theory but it is not entirely accurate. Accepting an offer within the 30 day deadline simply locks up that offer for you only with respect to AROTC. Even if you accept it, if you later get an offer from another service's ROTC, or from any service academy, including USMA, you can also select that offer and have the luxury of deciding later which one you actually prefer. Although some folks here will criticize the practice, there are those who will keep the accepted AROTC scholarship offer in their vest pocket up to and even past R-Day ( Report Day).
Wow I thought the 30 days was a lock but now that you say that can't lock when med boatds not dobe. Thanks for the info.

Additionally the reason impo not to view this scholarship as a recruitment tool, is if you need it to attend that college from a financial perspective, than most posters will say rethink your decision.

So since I am a SCD Veteran and can't afford a 40k a yr even if he worked his ass off to be offered merit scholarships that cover 50% of it he should not apply for a ROTC scholarship because he nor I can afford the 20k a yr left?

No, you apply to the colleges you CAN afford, such as your in-state publics, and also look for those that offer Room and Board Scholarships to their ROTC scholarship recipients.

Kezycat, you have to do what is best for your family. I think what is being advised as many on this board have been through the process and have seen it year after year, is so many kids either lose their scholarships or drop their scholarships and can't remain at that school because of finances. We have also seen kids who received scholarships and are waiting on medical waivers start at school and ROTC and then not receive the waiver. The kid has to leave school a few weeks in as the family couldn't afford the tuition. What is being advised is to pick a school that is most affordable for you family such as IS public in case you child gets hurt, hates ROTC, gets in trouble and loses their scholarship. There is even a list on here of schools that provide room and board scholarships to schools as that can still run $10k+ a year. Some Army recipients will have it cover Room & Board as its cheaper than IS tuition costs and additional scholarships were for tuition only. Heck we have seen kids on this forum receive ROTC scholarships back out of their #1 schools because they only received a 3 year scholarship or they can't afford the Room and Board. You have to do what is best for your family. Good luck to your DS.
