First Reaction When Your DS/DD Decided to Apply?

“Doorman” & “The Big One” is all I will say ... happy hunting 😁

Surprised...then very proud! We are a Navy family and didn't know our DS had any interest in the military, he chose AFROTC.

Confused why he would turn his back on so many other amazing opportunities

I am curious what "other amazing opportunties" are out there that outweigh any Service Academy education. First, the education is outstanding ... it may not dive as deep into some narrow area of engineering or make you a subject matter expert in some political science discipline, but a Bachelor degree anywhere is really just the door to further learning. Second, the intangibles benefits of 4 years in a leadership lab with other high quality individuals are immeasurable. Third, there is a guaranteed job at graduation, leading the young men and women in today's military. DD/DD may find that that is truly their calling and serve a career, or may leave after minimum obligated service , but in either case serving as a junior officer will provide benefits for years to come.

Of course I am biased - I have been there, done that, and would do it all over if I had the chance. Sure, there are other "amazing opportunities" out there, but frankly they can wait. Looking back, my time at USNA and in the Navy has only been a benefit to my current career.
