I want to book my son's airline ticket over the Dec break. I've been checking prices & it's already gone up $17 since last week. Is there a check out and check in time from the Academy.

The cadets are allowed to leave for breaks after LMD (last military duty). In December, usually that is their last exam for doolies. This year, exams run from Dec. 17 to 20 (and there is an evening exam block), but that doesn't mean necessarily that your cadet will have exams each day--there is some flexibility. Last year the exam schedule came out around Parents Weekend if I remember correctly. The cadet wing has to return by Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. according to the latest academic calendar.

Although I realize prices can change, it may be worthwhile to wait until you know your cadet's schedule unless you can make reservations with an airline that doesn't charge change fees.

While I understand you want to get the cheapest fare, you need to wait til your son knows his final exam schedule, and for that matter, when he wants to return home. Some cadets choose to spend a few days skiing or snowboarding before coming home.

He will also need to figure out his transportation to the airport and that cheap 6am / 11pm departure might not work transportation wise. 4* tend to not want to ask people for rides, but the bus schedule doesn't always work with your flight.

We have come to accept the fact we can't make plane reservations as far in advance as we'd like and thus will spend more on them than those who can make plans 4-5 months ahead of time. Our DS makes his own reservations because he knows his schedule and what will work with it.

You could make the return to USAFA reservation now -- that day/time won't change. Need to be back by 1900 on Jan 3.

"stay flexible! " Thanks for the advise...you both were very helpful. :thumb:

Finals are your problem you could by the ticket for going back to the hill but you won't know about coming home. Last xmas DS had everything done and could have come home a day earlier if not for a final he could only schedule at 10 P.M.

If you are booking one way individual tickets (which alot of time nowdays are the same as round trip) you can at least go ahead and book the return leg.
