Food at USMA

Mea culpa for suggesting you might be a troll...in recent years (the last 3 that I've been here) food at WP has not been an issue. It was an issue at USNA, but no longer. Our cadets have plenty of food. Are they sometimes too nervous to eat? Absolutely. Does a squad leader occassionally have table rules that are not conducive to good digestion or time to eat? Sure. However, there is so much food there, and a good variety as well. Some cadets order food out, but there's no need to spend a dime if they are willing to eat what is served (and get to the mess hall for all meals).

This forum has been invaluable to me; I apologize for the accusation. There are a few items that do touch nerves, and I guess hearing WP rumors of food deprivation was one for me. It's a great place. Cadets do complain (a lot)...but mine has never complained about lack of food.

Good luck in your research--we really are here to help and will do what we can!:thumb:

If after my very first post I was accused of being a troll, I probably wouldn't come back to ask any more questions.

mom, don't be too hard on yourself. The military is like a big family (even including the Woops-the side of the family we sometimes don't admit being kin to). If one walks up, introduces themself, and then commences trashing our sister, even if they are correct, we might not take kindly to it.

It was a reasonable question; my NC, like you, met graduates from the early 1980s who talked of hiding contraband candy bars in the light fixtures, donating blood to get food, and eating toothpaste because at that time hazing at mealtimes and denying food was pretty common - and plebes were served last, with whatever was left from the family-style dishes.
As part of the change that scoutpilot referred to, the more senior cadets had to adopt the attitude of officers in the field - where enlisted eat first, and officers last, to take care of the men in their charge. Somebody also finally woke up to the idea that they need to keep these kids healthy when they invest so much in them.
So ,Beachpavilion, you're correct on history, and no doubt the Old Grads think USMA has gone soft...

Hello everyone! Finished CBT yesterday, issued computers today, and feeling great. I'm very happy with the company I'm in and the barracks I'm living in (sharing a two-man room with three classmates sucks though). Even though I genuinely felt like quitting at times, Beast was generally a lot easier than I expected it to be. I learned a lot during CBT, accomplished all of my goals, had fun, and made great friends.

To answer some questions here about food...

How well the NCs were fed depended entirely on your squad leader during Beast. There is nothing wrong with the food or the amount that is served. For most New Cadets, it was the 3-5 bites rule that restricted the amount of food everyone ate. For me, my squad leader during first detail strictly enforced the rule and my squad was hungry all the time. She would get legitimately angry if we got enough to eat. On the other hand, I had friends who ate well because their squad leaders allowed them to eat however they wanted as long as it wasn't rude, which makes a lot more sense than forcing kids to take tiny bites. Not to mention the sin of wasting so much food every meal.

The Beast is slain however and there are far more important things to think and do than to dwell on what was bad in CBT. As I am finding out, cadets seem to have no trouble in getting enough to eat during the academic year.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Chock put it well. It all depended on your squad leader. First detail our squad ate more than every other squad in our Company. Second detail, our squad was hungry a lot.

The biggest thing was the chews, and all the knowledge. Some SL's had their NCs spouting knowledge until five minutes after "Rest" thus leaving their NCs with about 5-10 minutes to eat at only 5 chews per bite.

But, Beast is over, and every should be getting plenty of food now.
