planes, trains and automobiles.....

I noticed in the handbook, it was suggested that you could take Amtrak to New London. For long leaves ( Thanksgiving, etc.), do many of the cadets choose this option to go to/ from airport? When checking on prices the tickets were only $14 from Providence which would beat a $100 taxi ride. Even with a taxi fee to the station and then from the station to campus, it still seems cheaper. Any thoughts?

During scheduled busy periods (such as before and after Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc....) the Academy normally runs a shuttle to and from the Providence airport and sometimes Hartford (there is a small charge). If you can't go when the shuttle leaves, and/or if you are going to another airport such as Boston, sometimes you can get a ride with someone else going to thei airport. Amtrak to Providence works well, as it is a short taxi from the Academy to the train station in New London, about $20 for the train, and then you either take a taxi or shuttle from the train station in Providence to the Providence Airport. (Amtrak might eventually stop at a new train station soon to be completed next to the Providence airport, but there are some politics involved). If you are flying out of Boston, you take the train all the way to South Station in Boston, then take the subway to the airport.

In general, the cadets figure it out pretty quickly.

Since everyone is coming back at the same time you can usually find a ride, but worst case you can take the train. Its 10 bucks for a shuttle to the station and then around 20 for the train to New London.

My son took amtrak to and from Newark over Christmas leave. It was the best airport to get a direct flight (at a reasonable cost) to the west coast. It was cheap and simple.

But, as said above, if you are flying in/out of Providence or Hartford, odds are you will run in to someone headed to New London.

If you take Amtrak be sure to pad-in extra time to make a flight connection. The two times our 4/c took Amtrak it was late by over an hour each way. "Semper Gumby"

Sponsor families are also a resource to consider, as they often are taking one or more up I-95 to Providence.

Good point. The cadets must not return late from leave or liberty.

Less than 30 minutes - Class 3 offense
Less than 2 hours = Class 2 offense
Greater than 2 hours = Class 1 offense

What was the Academy rate at Holiday Inn? We thought the 89.00 a night was pretty good, so I'm curious how much cheaper HI is? Thanks so much!

Just an FYI....all the hotel rates are listed right on the USCGA website
It's under "ABOUT USCGA", then click on "Directions and More" Here is the link:

Those are the rates that the hotels will offer to Academy cadets and parents BUT there are restrictions and blackout dates.
Also, some only offer "x" number of rooms at their location for big weekends. Key is to book early and if you decide not to attend an event there is always someone willing to take your room reservation :thumb:

USNA1982BGO is correct. Son just received his appointment this week, and while many of the hotels do offer a discounted rate for CGA, that rate is basically "sold out" at several of the hotels...they do have rooms available...just not at the lower rate! Makes me wish that appointment was received several months ago, but Hey, we're definitely not complaining!!!! He'll sure take it no matter what the date! Just wonder what the families do when they get even later appointments off the waitlist!!

New London here we come!!

Don't worry. You'll always be able to find a hotel room. Don't forget to ask for AAA or military discounts (if you have an ID card or your cadet is staying with you). The only time it got a bit concerning was when there was a big event in Mystic.
If you are a military member (or your cadet makes the reservation and checks you in) its worth checking availability at the Lodge on the Groton Sub Base (best to have a military sticker; it can be difficult at times to get on base).
We were able to get great rooms at a great price in a very nice hotel two weeks before graduation. Just depends where you want to be situated.

Calendar/parent's weekend

When thinking about schedules, don't forget about parent's weekend. Although it can be a bit busy for your cadet, it is a good time to spend with your cadet and meet some of his/her new friends and other parents. Try not to be the parents that don't come if you can possibly make it. It's hard for some cadets when they see their friend's families all over the place that weekend and not their own families. I once heard somewhere to beg, borrow, and steal (don't really steal), but to go to parent's weekend.

Okay, can I re-phrase my last post!! If it is within your means to do so, try to go to parents weekend and see your 4/c. They will really be missing you by then
