Do cadets get paid while attending field training and reimbursed for transportation costs to/from Maxwell AFB? (DS not on AFROTC scholarship).
Also, is there additional training (mandatory or optional) for cadets during the summer months between the junior and senior year? If not, what have other cadets done/plan to do during that summer? If in AFROTC, are there opportunities in the AF or at various AF facilities/bases for cadets to earn some money or do they just get another internship with some private/public agency in their field of study? Paying for college is still an issue and a challenge.

We do not get paid for FT. But for non-scholorship cadets, we start getting a stipend during our AS300 years.

Me personally, I just got an engineering internship. Ive already let them know Im leaving for Max 3, and lucky for me they are cool with it. Just have your DS get a summer job in the time he is out of FT at Costco or something.

Travel should be covered by the Air Force. Your son need to work through the detachment to make this happen. I think they get paid while at FT. This may have changed with sequestration, however. There is no mandatory training during the following summer. There are a number of opportunities available. If your son works hard and excels at FT, he may be invited back the following summer as a Cadet Training Assistant (CTA). My oldest did that and my second son is a CTA this summer. There are other offerings and classes available but you have to do some research and talk to people. I know a Junior from my son's detachment is doing training of some type at the AF Academy this summer.

There are a number of scholarships available to cadets all through college. Hard workers can be rewarded with Commanders scholarships. I've also heard that some are available from various Air Force commands if your cadet is willing to commit to that command, i.e. Missiles. The detachment cadre would have that information.

FT 2016 is unpaid since it is less than a 30 day TDY. If you are a deferred AS300 already on stipend, you will continue to receive the stipend throughout the summer and during FT, as you normally would throughout the year. Aulysses is on point with the CTA gig, a bunch of cadets who rank high at FT go back the following summer for that. There are a lot of different summer programs you can go to. Some go to Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) training, some go for Special Tactics Officer (STO) training if they want to pursue SOC careers. Project GO is also a popular one where I believe you go to another country and study a language. There are many more I don't know about. In my opinion, most of us cadets just get jobs or internships within our major. No training other an FT is mandatory in the summer. When you return from FT, you will fill out a travel form that will reimburse you costs to/from the airport or however you traveled.
