My DD and her dad are at the Genesis Invitational. He just called me to fill me in and said there are some stellar applicants. We already knew that! It just reiterates the fact that with 2,000 applications and 300 plus spots one must be grateful to receive a spot! It was humbling for him because he has always felt our DD has a strong package but he's a little nervous now!
But anyway, for those of us who have never been to the CGA he says its beyond beautiful and an amazing place to be able too go to school.

Been there several times ... love it there ... Have faith ... DD will be just fine!

If she is qualified she has a good a chance as anyone! My DS attended AIM last summer and loved it, it galvanized USCGA as his #1 choice.

That is my worry. She is qualified in every area except her test scores. DD's dad just called to say these applicants have nearly perfect scores and she's not even close.
Give me your opinion:
4.06 gpa with many AP classes including AP Calculus
Girl State delegate
Student Body President
2 varsity sports, lettered in both
Police explorer, fire explorer
many hours of community service
This is just an example.
The clincher-1200 SAT 630 math, 570 reading. We've already don all the prep courses. This is 200 point jump but enough.
Maybe she'll get prep school?

I know they look at the whole candidate - not just one aspect - others may have higher SAT ... but less gpa or course load ... less community service or less leadership roles ... keep the faith ... keep in touch with admissions ... positive thoughts!

Thanks for the encouragement. Her dad was a little overwhelmed with the numbers but I reminded him about the whole person evaluation. I agree with that. One applicant did admit she does nothing but study and I know that won't work either.
Thanks

DS received an USCGA scholars program(prep school) appointment last week. He was invited to Genesis but declined since he'd attended AIM and the cost and time spent traveling from Alaska. Genesis is a diversity outreach program I believe. It is incredibly hard for the academies to find good diversity candidates. Keep retaking those tests and try ACT as well. Some people just don't test as well as others and they look at the whole person. "Perfect scores" is just one thing.

So the other people that are attending Genesis literally have test scores around 1600 SAT and 36 ACT? Or just strong scores such as 1450 SAT and 33 ACT

Consider tutors. Retake the SAT until you saturate. CGA superscores (takes highest score).
Take the ACT. Retake the ACT until you saturate.
Train for the PFE. It's the mind and the body they want.

Yes, he said they were close to it. 1560/35. Crazy! However, he had the chance to talk to admissions and they did make it clear that plenty of applicants with lower scores have been accepted because they had a lot of other important qualities to offer.

DD started with ACT, wore herself out on that one. Went from 19 to 25. So big leap but a bigger one would be better. Then discovered the new SAT and liked it better. So started all over with Kaplan and went from 1000 to 1200. Too bad. Such a smart kid but just never mastered the test despite the courses. I should have gotten the tutor. One more try. Dec.3.

Wow tough competition! Best of luck for your DD this year!

The competition will be fierce from other academies as well for these diversity candidates with perfect test scores. My DS who was invited to Genesis and declined to go had a 1300 SAT.

I wish you all the luck! I suggest forgetting about a tutor. She would be best served by reading every opportunity she gets without it impacting her other activities.
