I received a Casio G-Shock for my birthday and absolutely love it.
And, it looks like they are creating a military-based line:

I got mine before I knew about the military ones:

Anyway, I love mine. Solar is useful, and it cannot be damaged (from what I've seen)

Thanks PackerMatt - I have no clue when it comes to picking out a watch - you've been a big help. I checked out the website. What do you think about the "bulkiness"?

heyy!

jBrown,

Hey that sounds great. I'm from NorCal too, how was the process for your daughter? I'm going to start very soon and I was just wondering what to expect. Any tips or advice? Who did your daughter get her nomination from? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just curious(and a little nervous).

:thumb: Hey Alex, this is Rosie - you e-mailed me. I'll reply to your e-mail separately, but just letting you know I'll be available on the forum too! ^^

hi popeyesmom- my son also has this watch and dearly loves it. I asked him about the 'bulkiness' and he said it was only a slight problem when he had to wear dress shirts. He could still butten the shirt but it was a bit tight. Other than that, no issues and he recommends it highly.

Not a watch for AFA BCT so I hear so I guess we'll hold on to it over the summer and give it back to him on Parents weekend. Not sure of the rigors/requirements of Plebe Summer so I'll defer on that to the Navy folks.

Thanks for the feedback on the watch....now we are trying to plan the graduation party.....I had a thread on here awhile back about that, but can't find it...

Graduation Party

Okay - I just read an older post about not doing the whole Navy theme....well, when we finally asked our son, he said, "What!! I would LOVE the Navy theme - everything in blue and gold and anchors.....so, we are now doing the Navy theme....but I am stumped on the food. His guest list is a long one and the room we have booked will only hold half the number so we are doing an "Open House" instead of a party. Hopefully, people will come throughout the evening and we will be able to fit everyone comfortably. Now, I am looking for input on food ideas. A sitdown meal is out of the question, but we still want to have good food. Fish is on the menu.....any suggestions?

I'm sure every school is different -- but one thing we realized last year when our D graduated is that all the graduation parties for her classmates were... after graduation. And what that meant was that neither she nor her friends wanted to be tied down to any one particular party, but go to all. So an open house was what most chose to do, with hors d'oeuvres -- it was family and adult friends who stayed the longest, but the classmates came and went over the course of the evening.

Exactly - we didn't want to tie anyone down for an entire evening. We are having the open house the night before graduation. Graduation is the next morning at 8:00 AM. I have to admit that the party preparations and baseball season are keeping my mind off the fact that my S is going to be leaving soon :)

There is a cookbook called "Brigade Seats" has recipes from King Hall and other special USNA occassions. You might be able to find it on Amazon or ebay. I have it and it has lots of cool ideas!

Oh PMLutton - you are such a good friend and we haven't even met....I am going to search for it now. Thanks!!

Ahhh... sorry popeyesmom, I only check the USNA forums occasionally, since I have little knowledge about water and the people who dwell in/on it

Anyway, to answer your question....
The bulkiness is the only aspect I don't like about it. I never really wore a watch before the G-Shock I have now, so it took some time getting used to.

It doesn't really bug me anymore... sometimes it gets caught on my sleeve or something, but that happens to all watches. I guess it's just personal preference/comfort. Besides the usefulness of its features outweighs the discomfort for the first few weeks (Not having to buy a new battery, automatically atomic updates every night, and my personal favorite: an automatic backlight that comes on when you bring your wrist up).

Hope that helped a little... by now you might've already bought something else haha... sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

No problem Packmatt7 - I think my boss is getting him the new Casio military inspired watch that came out in February....hope it is good for him. I know that he won't get a real chance to use it until the Academic year but it should last a long time and take some wear. Right now I am just trying to get baseball season to slow down so that I can enjoy these next few months....:(

What about sunglasses for a grad gift? I would think that they need a good pair of polarized lenses for when they are out there near/on the water in the summer. Does anyone know if they are allowed during Plebe summer?

Re the graduation party discussion - I agree with RaptorDad. When my daughter graduated from HS all the kids migrated from one party to another. We served chopped bbq (we live in the south - standard party fare!) and had a buffet. Will do the same for son who is going to the academy. Son is having his party with first cousin so will probably have to tone down the Navy theme a bit....

Okay - We decided on the menu for the open house: Shrimp & Sausage Jambalaya & rice, cornbread, grilled chicken, meatballs, fruit bowl with melon and strawberries, veggie tray & dip, brownies, grapes, crackers & cheese, cake, iced tea, lemonade and water. FYI - We found an anchor paper punch at Michael's and then found two color (blue on one side and gold on the other) poster board and made anchor confetti out of that. My father (ex-submariner) had some signal flags that we are using as well in the decorations. If you want more particulars or decoration ideas, you can ask....just don't want to bore anyone with a long list. LOL. PMLutton helped me not to get carried away when she took me to the Mid Store!!!

great menu! What is your address and when is the party?

A gift card to Victoria Secrets is a great gift for girls. After plebe summer they can wear anything under the uniform. When we went to the mall all the plebes in VS.

One would hope not the red underwear under the summer white shirt...

I saw something on a thread last year about giving your plebe a certain kind of coat, a warmer version of the winter coat mids are issued...........perhaps some current mid moms will share info........

Plebes are seldom out of uniform.

Besides, I cannot imagine anything being much warmer than that long, heavy wool overcoat that they issue. I don't ever recall being cold while wearing it or thinking that it was in anyway inadequate.

In fact, I don't even recall wearing civilian clothes as a Plebe. Things may have changed since my day, however.

Over the last few years the heavy wool O coat was not issued to the Mids. Instead, they were issued a combination rain and winter coat made of gortex. It may have kept them dry but they all complained that is was not warm at all. Many parents for Mids in the Classes of 2009, 10 and 11 bought the standard O coat for their Mids. To purchase this coat your child must be at the Academy as you need their alpha number in order to order an official coat. I don't think that many Plebes purchased the coat but by youngster year it was a good Christmas present. Also, many bought them off of upper class during commissioning week. That being said, I believe they have gone back to the O coat being issued to the new classes.

The gortex coat also looked wrinkled and not very sharp.
