Hello, I am curious about the standards for girl's hair. Can I put it in a bun? Or do they cut your hair on I-Day? :thumb:

Yes, hair gets cut I Day.:frown: Lone exceptions tend to be those gals who've got the "standard" short cut in advance. And many do as the barbers @ the Academy tend to be quick and cheap with the 'dos coming out precisely same.:rolleyes:

It grows back, and short hair'll be the least of the concerns amongst fellow plebes with precisely the same "style" or lack there of. And no thong underwear either.:yllol:

Yes they cut your hair. The general rule has always been if it is long they essentially cut it to the top of your jaw line. They can do quiet a doozy on your hair that day, recommend you cut it before you go. They take you to the barber/beauty salon every two weeks during plebe summer. The nice ladies there will straighten it out if they jack it up. Recommend you cut it a few days before you go and get used to pulling it back with appropriate hair stuff to keep it out of your face.

I cut my hair at the beginning of this year so I would be prepared. Its at my shoulders, so I guess I am going to have to cut it shorter.

If your hair is at your hairline, doesn't it become difficult to pull into a ponytail?

When your a firstie, is your hair short as well? I've seen pictures of females with their hair in buns? Is that a privilege for upperclassmen??

After plebe summer you can grow your hair out and put it back in a bun. Plebe summer you just kinda have to deal with how annoying it is.

Whether hair is cut or not may be academy dependent. My daughter is at USAFA (2nd class -- Junior). She was not required to cut her hair at inprocessing and she worked at the girls' hair station at inprocessing this past summer. At USAFA, if girls can get their hair in the regulation bun at inprocessing in a reasonable amount of time -- their hair is not cut. My daughter, who has shoulder length hair, has not been required to cut her hair while at USAFA. But maybe this depends on the Academy. Just a heads up -- so parents/girls know that this may depend on the Academy.

No expert here, and with all due respect, USAFA and USNA can be, often are worlds apart.

If your hair is already cut to regulation guidelines, they won't cut it. I recommend you get it cut before you arrive at I-Day.

highly recommend you get it cut before I-DAY. USNA will cut your hair if it's too long. unlike USAFA it is required to be no longer than jaw line. you will not have to get it cut again unless you wish. the reason for cutting is two fold...time management and your summer is very physical and can't have your hair always falling out of the bun or getting caught up in things like rope/line (i.e. obstacle courses) or helmets. unless you want uneven haircut do it prior to I-Day b/c at least you can have somewhat of a style if you like.

I recommend getting it cut before you go, but as a warning, girls tend to want to flirt with the envelope of the regulations on pre-I-Day hair cuts. If it touches your shoulders or collar, it's too long and they'll plop you down in the barbers chair and butcher it. It has to be at or above the angle of your jaw. You can be completely within regulations and have a stylish doo, just be clear about the regulations before you go to the stylist....even consider taking the regs in with you to the stylist complete with pictures, which are available on the web or from a Navy recruiter. The key is to make whatever cut you get low maintenance. You will absolutely have no time to fuss with your hair. It'll be the last thing on your mind. You'll get used to 30 second showers and MIGHT have 5-10 seconds to run a brush through your hair during plebe summer. I also don't recommend getting a buzz cut as a girl....it's not seen as gung-ho or cool, but it brands you as a weirdo.

Good move. I had mine cut short before I-Day. I had no extra cutting and was fine throughout PS. In my day, we had to keep it short the full 4 yrs. Now you don't. The "growing out" period is rough. Just saying.

What happens in the "growing out" period where it is past regulations for loose hair but not yet long enough to be put up in a bun? I assume you will get called out on it a little bit but is it a big deal? Otherwise I don't see how anyone would be able to grow it back out.

All of the female upperclass have been through that phase (unless they're one of the exceptions who keep their hair short the entire time) and so are sort of understanding.

Liberal use of hair spray, gel, bobby pins, and anything/everything else is encouraged. The day you can get your hair back into the tiniest, messiest, loosest, and worst bun is one of the best during plebe year.

they are normally pretty lenient on female plebes' hair. as long as its not ridiculously out of regs, no one is going to say anything. that being said, most girls want to get their hair up in a bun as soon as possible. mostly because its annoying having it down, but also a little because a baby bun looks slightly less plebe-like than having to wear it down.

Our daughter had her hair cut to regs before leaving for I Day a couple of years ago. She even brought the paperwork to her hairdresser and had him cut it shorter just to be sure. They still cut it at I Day. She said they didn't do any measuring at I Day, they just cut everyone's hair no matter what. Don't spend too much on a haircut. (I wish we had known that!)

For growing out her hair, she had to use a lot of bobby pins and barrettes that were close to her hair color and kept it pinned back.

My Mid was more disturbed by having to wash her t-shirts in the sink, least she wear the same stinky one three days in a row. If you're a girly girl get ready for some adjustments; two minute showers, no make up, no tanning booths, clothes that don't fit, issued under-garments (at least until you can hit Victoria Secrets at the mall after reform) one piece swim suit, etc...

Re: hair, she did learn how to tie a "sock bun" pretty quickly. But there was that one stray lock that they missed on I-day. She refused to trim it as a reminder of those nice folks.

Relax. Thousands have made it - you will too.

Must say that's a pretty good description (although I never had to wash T-shirts in the sink).
