In need of advice! Wondering whether Girls State or NASS would benefit me more in the application process. I understand GS does add more points to candidate scoring but I'm wondering if this would make or break my application?

I will be visiting USNA for CVW in March but I'd also like to experience Summer Seminar if accepted. Please share any thoughts or opinions!

Girls State all the way; Girls State adds to your WCS while NASS does not (although the squad leader review can help or hurt you). The CVW is a great opportunity as well, I did both and I was very happy to have done so. You can probably try to get a session that does not conflict with Girls State either: a win-win.

If you search under "Boy's state," you'll see quite a few posts on this topic -- only for the guys!

a lot of people say to go to boys state/girls state instead of nass, but I think you should go to nass definitely! I was kind of in the same place as you last year, only the difference was either go to nass, or a huge college showcase for soccer, and I chose nass. Nass is only a one time chance, because only rising seniors can go, and plus if you are still deciding if the military life is for you or not, Nass can definitely help you with that decision. Only if you are 100% sure, that you really want to go to usna, then in that case, go to girls state. Just my 2 cents.

If you have any other questions regarding nass, and the experience there feel free to ask me any questions! I went there last year and it was great :)

If my DD would have had the dilemma of choosing Girls State over NASS, I would have told her to go to Girls State. That being said, my DD did go to NASS (as well as West Point's summer program), and thoroughly enjoyed it and is even more convinced that she wants to be a Navy Officer. But that week helped her to decide, in the end, that she didn't want to go to the Naval Academy, but wanted a more traditional college experience. She withdrew her service academy applications and only pursued ROTC Scholarships. If she had not gone to NASS, I would have insisted that she go on a CVW to experience the academy before making the decision. So I would say if you have to choose, go to Girls State and then definitely go on the overnight visit to the academy to see what it's really like there before making your final decision.

Not sure if NASS will give someone a real dose of the military life. My personal opinion is that SA experience doesn't equate to real military life. Yes on uniform, chain of command, military protocol, "regimental life style", and etc, but no to day to day challenges of being a military officer.

Not sure if you are considering other SA's, but I know from discussions with other posters that AIM (USCGA) did a better job of simulating what plebe/swab summer would be like. The time frames for NASS and AIM might be different, so you could do both Girls State and a summer session. Doing a CVW will give you an idea of what the yard is like when the brigade is back. Just a thought.

My DS went to NASS-he was very glad he did. It made him even more certain he wanted to go to the naval academy. He said there were a number of attendees that realized the academy was not for them. While NASS may not contribute to the "whole score"--he is quite certain it REALLY helped him nail his MOC interview--leading to his nomination and eventual BFE.

Why not do both???? It's very possible
I mean kill 2 birds with one stone. It all depends on when Girl's State is and the Session you picked for NASS. If you go to the right one it becomes possible to do the other.

Sometimes you can negotiate your NASS session with Admissions so that you could attend both NASS and Girls State. Might be worth a try. Best wishes.

Good gosh, this has been answered too many times.
There are THREE NASS sessions in June and typically in most states only ONE one week June session of girls or boys state. List the TWO NASS sessions that don't compete with boys or girls state as your first and second choices for NASS. ADMISSIONS WILL WORK WITH YOU!!!
Let's put this one to bed.

Just to clarify, I am aware there are three sessions available. I have a family wedding that will be taking place in June that interferes with two NASS sessions. Therefore, I will be forced to decide between the two. Thank you for all the insight.

Are GS and NASS on all the same days? During BS, I had friends who were given permission to leave partway through the. Amp to go to NASS because it interfered for us too. They still "graduated" BS, but just left early. You should talk to GS about that if possible! Both are great experiences and can both help your application/decision process for USNA. Good luck!

Getting to experience NASS needs to be high priority since the decision to join the military is a life-changing commitment. If the wedding is of a sister/brother, I can see how that can be an issue, but if you referring to a cousin or simliar relative, I think you need to re-assess your priorities. With a bit of scheduling planning, you can attend BOTH NASS and Girls' State.
