For incoming cadets who wear glasses and/or contacts: when after BCT are 4th class cadets permitted to wear their own glasses? Are there restrictions on the style, type, etc. (we understand about the glasses that will be issued on Inprocessing and that contacts cannot be worn during BCT). The question is really about when cadets can wear their own glasses again and whether the style, color, size, etc. is restricted?

I know that you can wear civilian glasses/contacts after BCT, though I'm not sure about restrictions.

i dont wanna dig out the AFI or CSP reference that says so, but as long as they're reasonable. they cant be like, pink, and big, and loud.. pretty much everything is alright as long as you dont stand out and look ridiculous

Thanks! I was able to reach someone in the Optometry Clinic who gave basically the same answers -- contacts and civilian glasses after BCT and personal glasses are fine so long as they are not too, flashy, etc.

Good question. Do current cadets advice that we bring our old glasses to the academy (they're all worn out and my dog even bit one side lol We just haven't found it completely necessary to replace them since I wear contacts during the day) or just get a new pair here at home and bring it with us to USAFA and use those after BCT. By taking the them to the academy I mean getting a new "civilian-ish-and-not-bcg-" pair there for after BCT.

Most definitely bring a pair of glasses. Here's why. Supposedly, you sent in your glasses prescription with all your other paperwork. HOPEFULLY, if things go right, you'll have a pair of military BCG (Birth-Control-Glasses) waiting for you. However, there will definitely be mix ups where they didn't get your glasses done. And it could be a few weeks after getting there. And you WON'T wear your contacts, so you better have something. good luck. mike....

No I definitely understand that. But should I bring a NEW pair or my old pair and replace them at the Academy? I guess my question is: do they have good quality glasses for sale, are they cheap, or is it out of the question because there is no place to get them within academy grounds?

Brother Bomb. The glasses they GIVE you are free. They are called BCG (Birth-Controlled-Glasses) for one very simple reason. If you wear them, then there is NO CHANCE in hell that you will get any girl pregnant. And if you're a girl, then there's no chance anyone will get you pregnant. Hopefully that answers what the military will do for you, when it comes to the "Style" of glasses. But, as for buying some, you definitely can do that. And the military optometry even has some basic but decent styles "Compared to the BCG's". However; that is all after the fact of BCT. Glasses don't weigh anything. Bring both pairs if you want. If they forget your BCG glasses, use your beat up ones so they don't matter if you bang them up in the obstacle course or survival course. Have the newer/nicer ones so after BCT you will have a nice pair until you decide to keep them, buy a new pair, go with contacts, etc.... It could be a few weeks before you have the opportunity to go to an optometrist. as long as yours aren't Elton John style glasses, being them. If all you have is the old pair, then just bring those. You'll eventually get your BCG glasses and those will be fine until you get a better pair after BCT.

 So funny!

HAha Yess I'm a guy. And I get the fact that BCGs will be issued lol. I was talking about normal looking glasses. Do they have a store where you can purchase those at the academy? For example, glasses that aren't BCGs- regular frames, etc lol.

i lost my prescription glasses on my flight home for thanksgiving...

went to the optometry clinic when i got back, got a new prescription for some nice-looking glasses. for free. you get 1 free pair a year i think is what they told me

now there arent many different "styles" to choose from, but they arent bad.

If you are not too picky about frames, the optometry clinic will provide a free set of glasses (max of 1 set per year). They are not too bad, but the frame selection is about 6 styles in 3 colors (silver, gold, or black). They are all fairly conservative and a couple are moderately fashionable (nothing too stylish though, lol.)

That's the answer I was looking for. I should probably just bring my beat up ones, and get the free pair there to replace it after BCT. I'll be using contact lenses for classes and stuff though, so I won't really care about what the frames look like. Thanks, guys.

So the follow-up question is "What about contacts?" DS replaces his every two weeks. Does he need to bring a supply with him or can he get them from the optometry clinic when he runs out?

you have to buy your own contacts, you will not get them from the clinic and they are not paid for my tricare benefits, just glasses.

Very easy and very good prices (better than say Wal-Mart plus extra 20% off most times) online at Walgreens.com. Our C3C just got a new contact lenses prescription from the Cadet Optometry when he got back after Christmas Break. I ordered the contacts from Walgreens.com and they shipped them free to his P.O. box at the Academy. Contact lens exam is free but you have to pay for your own contacts and they don't carry any at the cadet clinic.
