I wear contacts and I know I’m going to get the privilege to wear those lovely birth control glasses at the academy. But my question is how long do they require midshipmen to wear them? And also what parts of the day are they required? I think I heard that when your third class, then you get the option of PRK, but I wanted to know if there are any times to wear contacts?

    Thanks

You wear BCGs for plebe summer. Once the AC year begins, you will be back in contacts or regular glasses. PRK doesn't come into play until 2/C year as long as your eyes qualify.

Most of the 2/c get PRK because their service selection requires it. BCG's, as odd as it might sound, are a blessing in disguise sometimes during plebe summer. They're great to have at times such as during Wet and Sandy and the courses because you won't have to worry about losing your contacts or scratching your glasses. Besides, no one cares what you look like during summer (besides the white works), as everyone is in the same boat.

Also a bunch of our classmates are still wearing their BCGs; they grew on them over the summer. :)

I have to say, the BCG readers I got at my last active duty physical still come in handy. They're good safety glasses when I'm doing a major clean-up project in the deep sink with harsh cleaners. My husband can testify they are still effective.:shake:

I got away with wearing my contacts through most of plebe summer. I found it more practical in the heat and humidity of Annapolis in July. Of course there were times, like pool phases, when it was more of a hassle, but these were few and far between. PRK - to date, the greatest thing I have gotten from the Navy.

If I only wear glasses when I'm driving, and I just got them, can I say I only need BCGs for the rifle range? I never need them otherwise, only when I'm looking at something far away. I don't know if that would be allowed to decide when to wear them.

If they see you wear them once, they will probably make you wear them all the time. Avoid them. When you go to your precom physical 2/c year, tell them you want to be a pilot.
