Glasses during plebe summer

Our DD is due for her yearly eye exam. What do you recommend ? Should we go ahead and get it. Or wait closer to June?
She will need an updated prescription and measurements for glasses. The form for the measurements comes in the Permit to Report packet. If there isn't a pressing need, I say wait until the PTR is received.

Getting even further off topic here, just bought DS new ASIC running shoes for track. Is there a color requirement?

I know back when I ran I used to throw out shoes fairly often as they lost cushion. Any recommendations on how often they'll need replaced, I should add that I got shin splints pretty bad.
No color requirements. It's actually easier for a parent to spot their plebe in photos if they have some sort of distinguishing feature on their shoes. Nobody cares what color you wear.

I think the recommendation is every 500 miles? I had a new pair for plebe summer, just broken in. I used them through plebe summer and until November, as I'm a more casual runner.

Replacement is really up to the runner. 500 miles is recommended. At 400 for me, I rotate in a new pair. If your DS runs track then he knows what shoes fit. For others, go get fitted at a running store. Especially if you get shin splits. Recommend you bring a broken in pair that will make it through at least Plebe Summer.

And agree on waiting for PTR packet for glasses. Saves a trip later on.

I have heard running shoes can be any color/shoe preference. That's what we are going with until told otherwise. Son is a XC runner and definitely has preferences in running shoes!

Coach, my mid is a runner too. He showed up with 2 pairs. Color was not an issue, although he tends to be pretty conservative in his choices. Maybe stay away the super colorful neon ones. Also as an xc runner your son may be surprised at how much less running he is actually doing over plebe summer relative to how much summer running he has done in past preparation for xc season.

That is true ahs. 2-5 miles usually of running at PEP. I remember seeing the distance runners plebe summer putting in extra miles during sports period. I wonder if they put a tracker on a plebe how miles a day they do Plebe Summer. Runs at PEP for a distance runner will be boring, but total mileage a day is probably double that with chopping.

Thanks for the answers and input everyone. I like the idea of a spare pair, even if it's just because one pair is wet or something.

  1. My daughter knew what to expect as a plebe this year since she has a brother there. Plebes in the summer all look the same and there is good reason for it. Before she left for plebe summer she cut off 14 inches of her hair and donated it to Locks of Love. During plebe summer, she had very short hair, very thick glasses, no makeup, wore a uniform that wasn't particularly flattering to the female form, and probably didn't smell very well (none of them do). She found it quite funny when on a day when a group from her company had a meeting in her room one of the boys saw a picture of her on her bulletin board I had sent from home and couldn't help but say, "You're pretty" in a very shocked tone. As for my son during his plebe year, he was shocked to see the girls he had trained all summer with during Plebe Parents weekend were actually girls. As a parent, it will be one of your proudest moments when you see them that day.

No, Plebes don't have to wear the issued shoes. I think USNA realized some years back that far fewer Plebes end up with bad shin splints or other injuries if they wear running shoes that are already broken in!
