My name is Jim Tobin of the Class of 1977 and I am the President of the USMMA Alumni Association & Foundation. On Tuesday, October 18 leaders of the Alumni met with Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to discuss recent events. Those present from the Alumni Association & Foundation were Charlie Hill ’65, Chairman, Ray Dombrowski ’76, Vice Chair, and me, with the Chapter Presidents Alliance represented by Gary Hicks ’76, Chairman, and Joanne Hicks, Recording Secretary. This meeting was held immediately after Secretary LaHood had addressed faculty and staff in Ackerman Auditorium.
Secretary LaHood made it very clear that RADM Philip Greene would not be reinstated as Superintendent under any circumstances. He also refused to provide any reasons why Admiral Greene was dismissed, as the question was raised in our meeting and by the faculty and staff. A positive that came from that address is the Secretary pledged that the school will continue to exist long after those who are present are all gone.
I realize that there is much anger, confusion, and anxiety over yet another turnover of the Superintendent’s position; we are all upset. Three Superintendent changes in three years is unacceptable for any organization, much less our institution. To compound this with three interim Superintendents while the search for a successor begins, only disrupts continuity and deflates morale. We can all agree that Admiral Greene was the right man for the job and was the perfect fit. You could not help but be impressed by him and he had the support of the alumni, parents, friends, the regiment, and industry.
However, we must now focus our energy to the task at hand: supporting the Academy and the Regiment of Midshipmen. There will continue to be efforts to take our issues to those in power in Washington, DC as well as our elected officials. We are formulating a strategy now and I ask that you be patient. Everyone will be kept in the loop and at that time your assistance will be greatly appreciated. We ask that prior to taking any efforts regarding this issue that you check with the Alumni Association to ensure that we are effectively coordinating our efforts to maximize their impact.
There is no doubt that you will hear many different rumors regarding this issue. None of them can be substantiated at this time. Every effort will be made to disseminate information immediately if we know any of them to be true or if any new information is deemed to be true.
Now is the time that we all must stand together; alumni, parents, and friends to make sure that our beloved alma mater is treated the way we and the United States of America expects and demands.
Thank you for your time and Acta Non Verba.

Thank you for sharing this information. The entire situation has been very distressing. DD truly liked and respected Admiral Greene. We are sad to see him go. Yes, rumors are flying without substantiation. I really appreciate those involved taking the time to keep the rest of us informed.

Talked to DS last night....this has taken a backseat to final exam preparation, so, glad to hear the regiment is keeping the main thing the main thing.
