I was a fan of "Rescue Warriors". Not the MOST positive book, but it gives you a pretty good idea of the good and bad parts...with a slightly distracting "hint" at environmental issues (from an environmentalist author).

Homer Hickam, author of "Rocket Boys," which was made into the movie, "October Sky," has written several fiction books with the Coast Guard as the theme. It is known as the Josh Thurlow series, and includes "The Keeper's Son." World War II but they give you a flavor of CG life.
