Ahem... last paragraph of the article:

"None of us in America can begin to understand or appreciate what Saeed has endured after being imprisoned in Iran because of his Christian faith," Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the relief organization Samaritan's Purse, said"

    Ahem, Ahem...Different person:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amir_Mirza_Hekmati

Read the title of the article, the text of the article and the caption under the picture in the article. He is a practicing Muslim.

He is no better, no worse than any of the others who were held. Just another American who served his country and went to visit his sick Grandmother. Very American in fact.

Touché - I still don't see where it says he's Muslim, but you're correct in pointing out that the sentence I quoted turns out to be about one of the other prisoners. What a poorly written article, really. Why include a quote about one person (in fact conclude the article with it), when the entire article is about someone else?
Glad they're all home now in any case.
And enjoyed the Michigan water reference too!

Not sure what Donald Trump has to do with this. How do you know this man is a Muslim? There was not one reference in the article that states he is. Amir Hekmati could be a Christian for all we know. What we read is that he is an American ex-marine and that he is glad to be home. Careful how you stereotype people by their names and where their relatives may be from. God bless him for his service. I'm glad he is a free man and has been reunited with his family, as well as the other prisoners that were released.

Agreed. It was very poorly written.

I have to assume the Christian pastor's story is just as compelling as Hekmati's.

BTW. By your screen name, it looks like your DS/DD just got an appointment to WP. Congratulations!

This is a good article about this Marine, but I'm confused why the comment about trading Trump. I don't recall one time where Trump has said bad things about our military members or any other good law abiding citizens... I assume your backdoor shot is in reference to Trump (And many other Americans) wanting to stop immigration of Muslims to this country until we can fix our immigration system to try to make sure those coming are good people (Like the person in the article). I'm not a Trump fan but you are twisting things to fit your agenda.

Now, as long as we are trading, I'd give 100,000 Obama's for this fine marine.

I think it's obvious what Trump has to do with it, given his own words.

"Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on,"

Hence the title of the thread.

    Well, I saw this picture:

and I assumed he was, given the way the young lady on the left is dressed. But not being sure I googled him and found this:

    https://www.cair.com/press-center/p...-for-us-muslims-release-return-from-iran.html

Given the fact that apostasy is punishable by death in many Muslim nations, I didn't think CAIR would be carrying the water for a closet Christian.

Stereotyping? See above statement from Trump.

Were I stereotyping, I wouldn't have looked for the backstory on this guy.

Every heard of irony? Trump wants to ban all Muslims from entering the US. He has never qualified the statement. Until he does, its all Muslims.

    Neither do I.

Well. How 'bout we start with Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina.

No. It was not a backdoor shot. It was a front door shot directed only at Trump. (Sgt. Hekmati was born in the US.)

I don't really have an agenda, but rather a visceral reaction to certain things. I am intrigued by certain things. One of those is wondering how someone like Sgt. Hekmati and his family must feel. On the one hand, they must feel embarrassed and ashamed at what Muslim extremists and the Iranian government are doing. On the other hand, the rhetoric of the day is such that he and his co-religionists must "prove" that, in the country of their birth, they are good people. How does one prove that. I've never had to. My immigrant wife from a communist country never had to.

Just read up on this guy and what he did during his deployments. Imagine what would have happened to him if he'd been captured or kidnapped by AQAP. He wasn't just another infidel. He was fighting in an infidel's army. I love stories like his and I especially admire the Marine Corps for having the clear headedness to employ the skills of someone like him.

    Okay. I'm done.

You obviously have an agenda, to try to smear Trump. What an absolute joke that you say otherwise. Why not just post the article about a fine muslim marine and leave your political agendas for a another board.

You bring up an example of one good Muslim Marine and his family and somehow this justifies your political bash on Trump. Yet you make no mention of the massive issues they are having in Germany and all over Europe. How convenient.

There are many good muslims just like all races of people. But there are bad ones out there as well who would love to kill any American. Since when did it become a bad thing to try to protect our country and its citizens?

Next time post the article and save us your political viewpoint. Political views are like your arse, everyone has one and they all stink but yours.

Can you show me the picture where you determined they are Democrats? How do you know this family does not support Trump? You used their story and image to push your political viewpoint, did you get their permission?

It's a bad thing to punish/discriminate against people that didn't do anything for things that people of their race did. If the majority of bank robbers are black, is it fair to ban black people from banks? Lets substitute that analogy into what you said:

There are many good blacks just like all races of people. But there are bad ones out there as well who would love to rob any bank. Since when did it become a bad thing to try and protect banks and its customers?

It's not fair to punish people for the crimes of others. If it's fair to ban Muslims from entering our country because they are more likely to commit crimes, is it also fair to ban/punish people of certain races from things because they are more likely to commit crimes?

People from families that commit crimes are more likely to become criminals. If one member of a family commits a crime, should we send the entire family to jail because the rest of the family is more statistically likely to commit crimes? Where do you draw the line?

Calling a delay in immigration until the system is fixed punishment, is a stretch. Comparing it to putting a family in jail because a member killed someone is absurd.

Immigrating to this country is a privilege, not a right. Having a system in place to ensure those coming here are coming for the right reason is our right, not a privilege. And we not only need to stop those who want to kill us from coming in, but also those who just want to ride the welfare system as well. I do agree though that this should apply to everyone immigrating here.

And using someones story and image to promote this agenda without even knowing what they believe is ridiculous. I know many hispanics who are Republicans and support the immigration policy of the Republicans. They would be irrate if someone used their picture or story to support the Democrats views on illegal immigation. You are assuming all Muslims are democrats and all support your viewpoint. That is just not the case.

There's certainly a difference between illegal immigration and legal immigration. And there's certainly a reason to provide more critical reviews of populations coming from areas there MAY be terrorists in the ranks. That said, it shouldn't be based on religion.

I'm very conservative. Trump makes me nervous because I think he says what people what to hear. However, the digger people deep, the less conservative he looks.

The truly sad reality is that it even matters what his faith is.

Trump did not call for a ban to keep American Muslims from coming back in the country, so the OP's point is moot. I am for banning any other person who is not American from ANY country coming into the United States and staying here until every single American who wants a job, has a job. What is the purpose of letting more people in and to what benefit? We should use the people resources we have instead of bringing more in. We need to close the borders (every single one). It is our right as a sovereign nation to decide who is allowed to visit, stay or go. If people are not willing to come here and integrate and become part of our nation and live the American way, then they should stay in their own nation. They should not expect to come here and turn our nation into theirs. That is why Trump is on top, and not only is he saying what people want to hear, he is saying what many people believe but are afraid to say themselves. :zip:
