got my NWL

I doubt any LOA recipient hears anything about the NWL. MY DS had a LOA and I never heard of the NWL.

Another data point confirming that, DS was LOA holder, no word of NWL. Specifically, the letter stated "I have reserved a cadetship for you contingent on .....".

This does not invalidate the potential that they use slots from the NWL for that, just that it appears to be a very different bucket.

Somewhere last year or further back I found a MALO/RC brief that was the best accounting for the slots by category that I've seen, which showed even after the vacancies were filled, supe, rotc, presidential, etc, that there were slots available for LOA holders and (still) allowed the NWL minimum to be placed. Here was their math:

841 Congressional & service related (assuming all MOC's nominate at least one qualified candidate)
150 qualified alternates from the NWL (makes 991)
Plus however many qualified Medal of Honor related (few if any)

USMA can then fill the rest of the class with "additional Appointees" without regard to WCS in a 3:1 ratio of congressional to service related.

If the target class size is now 1150, that would leave roughly 159 slots in addition to the required NWL placed by WCS. And that's assuming all MOC slots nominated at least one qualified applicant. Don't know what the recent stats are, but in the past I've read that it's not uncommon to have unused MOC slots.

Also, my understanding from reading title 10 section 4342 that it mainly talks about who must be appointed (MOC, presidential, etc) if qualified.

After all the quota stuff, Section 4343 then states:
"If it is determined that, upon the admission of a new class to the Academy, the number of cadets at the Academy will be below the authorized number, the Secretary of the Army may fill the vacancies by nominating additional cadets from qualified candidates designated as alternates and from other qualified candidates who competed for nomination and are recommended and found qualified by the Academic Board."

This is separate from the 150 mandated from the NWL. They are referred to as "additional appointments" in zection 4343.

IE: If there are unused MOC slots, etc, those could be used for LOA as long as the candidate was qualified and on a nomination slate from some other source. Can't trade the nom slot, but they can use the unused MOC slot.

There were also ratios where 3/4 of the additional appointments had to come from MOC related noms. (rather than service related, etc)

Unused service related slots get allocated to other service related.

All that said, my read as an outsider is that while many LOA holders end up getting positioned as "qualified alternates" rather than vacancy appointees, they never really enter the NWL process. And in fact, would goof up the NWL process as they often have high WCS's. Likewise, most have appointments before other candidates start hearing about NWL.

Candidates and parents really don't need to heavily dissect this. It can cause undue stress and the application process is stressful enough!

Very helpful explanations, buff81. Thanks for putting it in terms that are easy to understand. :thumb:

buff81, what happens in the case that a candidate who did not receive an LOA actually has a more competitive portfolio for USMA? Would they then take the spots reserved for the LOAs?

Do those on the NWL who will ultimately NOT receive an appointment get notification of this or are they simply just left in the dark. And if so, when do they find out that they have not been accepted?

My letter that notified me of NWL placement said March or May 15th. one of those M's haha

Quadething, I am confused, you posted above that you are on the NWL, but in another thread you are listed as having recieved an appointment. Am i missing something? Not trying to be rude, just informed.

Yeah, I made sure back up plans were in place. I can get accepted to any college in Texas (top 10% get auto. acceptance) and I have high grades and scores so not being cocky, i'm just confident I'll succeed at a normal college. I'm visiting TX Tech and Okla. State this month and a few other places. I'm going to do accounting and engineering (probably petroleum) and play some football hopefully.

I have essentially the same question as Jayhawk .... do the folks on the NWL languish indefinitely, or does the Academy notify them of the final rejection at some point?

Yes, you will find out either way (acceptance or rejection). They will not leave you hanging. The TWEs for all those not selected from the NWL will arive late March, early April timeframe.

my son received a "we are sorry but we can not offer you acceptance into West Point" letter today. It is very vague and does not state why. We really thought that he was very competitive and at least would have been on the waiting list. We were under the impression that he could still better his application until the end of the month and do not understand why he was denied so soon. Does anyone have any thoughts on this.

What was your sons status regarding DoDMERB and his CFA? Other than that, I have no idea why you would have received a letter so soon. Maybe, due to the fact that this class will be extremely competitive, there may be some disqualifying aspect of your sons file! Not sure, I would most definitely call your RC about this - perhaps he can clarify. Good Luck

If you could give us some more details about your son's file - we might be better able to give an opinion. Plus what is his nom situation ?

For those of you that got wait-listed, i was put on the NWL too, and I received my appointment today!!!! Just keep an eye on your mailbox!!!!!!!

Best wishes,

He has received a congressional nom, has a weighted gpa of 4.03, unweighted 3.85, average of 650 on all parts of SAT whick I know is not amazing but he also just re took them and the scores are not in yet), varsity football captain, has many awards for football & received one scholarship for football so far, he thinks he did ok on CFA -- was planning on retaking to improve his scores on that also, passed the medical. He did have to get a form filled out for BMI where an army recruiter took height, weight and measurements but according to the staff sargeant he passed and we were supposed to hear if he did not and have until 2/13/12 to re test. He has taken numerous AP classes, calculus, physics, even classes at our community college during the summer. I would understand if he got denied, I just did not think it would happen so soon. He is hesitant to question it because he does not want to appear to be a whiner.

The only piece of info missing is his class rank - but if his class rank is in line with his GPA - it appears that he has a Competitive file.
If he is thinking about reapplying next year, it would not appear to be whining to ask where his file was weak so as to know where to improve. Also mention that he retook the SAT in January.
Best wishes to him.

thank you for the response..... his class rank is 13/486. I will have him inquire but I am not sure if he will reapply. He has also applied to the naval academy and several other schools. West Point was his first choice however. He understands that West Point is very competitive and was prepared with several back ups, but he was not expecting a rejection this early in the game.

Sometimes it's just hard to tell why some candidates don't get in.
It sounds like he has great Plan Bs though.
Hopefully, he has a nom to USNA too.
Good luck - I know you are proud of him. :thumb:

We do not have enough info to give you an answer. You should call his Regional Admissions officer to get futher details. It seems as if he had a strong file but something in his file is not strong. I was on the Admissions committee for two years. Three things that you do not know:
1. His references from his teachers
2. The results of his interview (if he had one)
3. Grading of his essays
It seems as if everyone thinks they did well on these three - however I can tell you that is not the case.
I have seen many cases where one of the three things above caused the candidate to be rejected.
