got my NWL

He has received a congressional nom, has a weighted gpa of 4.03, unweighted 3.85, average of 650 on all parts of SAT whick I know is not amazing but he also just re took them and the scores are not in yet), varsity football captain, has many awards for football & received one scholarship for football so far, he thinks he did ok on CFA -- was planning on retaking to improve his scores on that also, passed the medical. He did have to get a form filled out for BMI where an army recruiter took height, weight and measurements but according to the staff sargeant he passed and we were supposed to hear if he did not and have until 2/13/12 to re test. He has taken numerous AP classes, calculus, physics, even classes at our community college during the summer. I would understand if he got denied, I just did not think it would happen so soon. He is hesitant to question it because he does not want to appear to be a whiner.

IMPO, he is missing community service types of things (i.e. helping out at church, being in a club of that kind). Everything else looks amazing though, I wish him luck wherever he goes.

~Hopeful for 2017 just trying to help out~

the fact that many people are getting accepted/denied/NWL is making me more and more nervous. My application is complete (1st semester college transcripts included) and I have heard nothing, nada, zero. No NWL, no 3Q'd, no appointment, no denial. Is this typical? Is this some sort of sick test?

Medically qualified, physically qualified, I (am almost certain) academically qualified but no notification.

mng,
you are now in "admissions limbo"! Like many others, your file is probably very competitive - otherwise you would have not made it this far - admissions task is to find spots for people like yourself. My son was in the same situation as you last year - did not receive an appointment and did not find out until early April. Re-applying this year - waiting.........

It is my understanding the number of NWL openings may be as low as 50 candidates therefore any application improvements will be good. Also, I was told that EVERY candidate will be notified one way or another by 1 March (NWL, Out, or IN). The admissions board is meeting twice a week to get this done. The most important thing you can do (I was told) is to personally contact your RC and let them put a face with an application. One RC said he had 500 applicants (All enlisted, Nat Guard, or Army Res.) that he has 210 spots for but he has only heard (Phone call or email) from about 100. Said most spots would come from that 100 because he can identify with them and because he has a better understanding of who they are and how bad they want it. He made it clear that the more they know you the better you help your chances.
For what its worth!

See, i told you all there were only about 50 spots. haha I agree 1987jsd, Definitely hoping to improve my file and get higher up the list ! SAT scores come back in a week and i got a prestigious award just yesterday. pretty excited !

NWL - National Waiting List:
- Title X of the US Code mandates that WP must admit 150 candidates from the NWL by WCS- fully qualified (which includes being medically qualified) non-vacancy winners of MOC nominations will go on the NWL
- IOW - if you are on the NWL, then you are fully qualified (scholastically, physically{CFA} and medically{DoDMERB}) AND have a MOC nomination
- about 450 slots of the class will come from the NWL
- the NWL helps WP achieve their class composition goals thereby making sure the class has a balance of athletes, minorities, leaders, scholars, etc.
- continue to update your file (even if you have a LOA). The more points you can add to you WCS, the higher you move up on the NWL. Update your file anytime you receive an award, honor, named Captain of a team, lettered in a sport, improved ACT/SAT scores, leadership activities etc.

Above is taken directly from one of the sticky posts posted by buff81 (moderator). It specifically states that Title X mandates 150 candidates are taken from the NWL. My thoughts are that there will be fewer MOC's with multiple candidates receiving appointments. I hear the stories where some districts have 15-20 candidates receiving appointments. I predict fewer of those instances happening. Thus, those QUALIFIED candidates will be placed on the NWL and the top 150 in the NWL will awarded an appointment.

Nothing like ignoring valid information.

oh man I forgot my RC, a Colonel, doesn't know as much as you do about the WP system, my bad man packer

Another source of appointments from the NWL:
People who have been or will be offered appointments have until May 1 to accept. Normally about 85%+ will accept, but for each one that does not accept (or respond by May 1) an appointment is made from the NWL.

There are no RCs at WP that are COLs.

All I have seen is Majors and Captains that are in charge of the recruiting regions for West Point. There aren't any Colonels, let alone a Colonel Jackson, that I have seen listed as an RC?

Colonel Jackson...guarantee he is.

I can guarantee that there is not a COL Jackson that is a RC at WP.
The only COLs in the Admissions dept are the Director of Admissions and the Deputy Director.
Perhaps you mean your MALO or FFR?

whoever I get deferred to for admissions help, my area in texas has no assigned people so I go to him out of Houston

That is who COL Jackson told me to write letters to about updating my file ! haha Are you from TX, heller?

COL Jackson would be your MALO/FFR.
MAJ McClellan is the Regional Commander for the SW Region.

It's easy to confuse the terminology but there is a big difference in Admissions responsibility between a MALO/FFR and a RC.

does my MALO/FFR have any effect over my file? I know MAJ does according to what COL has told me.

We are the eyes and ears for Admissions for the local candidates.
We can give our opinions and make suggestions but it is ultimately the RC who makes the decisions.

There are many well meaning people - many of which are very knowledgable - on this forum. HOWEVER - THE "official" and most accurate source of information is your Regional Admissions Officer (RC). Everyone has a RC - there are 5 regions - Far West - Great lakes-Southwest - Southeast- Northeast.
These are the people who handle your application and refer them to the Admission Boards. They are the most reliable source of information to answer your questions. You should know who your RC is and contact them personally.
