Gov. Shutdown

The pay our military act is for active duty, USMMA cadets are not active duty, neither are ROTC cadets, they are not being paid either, Reservist and NG are not receiving their drill pay. All the above have one thing in common, they are not active duty.

The reason the USMMA is closed is because the majority of the FACULTY and STAFF work for the DOT and have been furloughed. If the majority of the FACULTY and STAFF were active duty the Academy would be open. It's not about the military service classification of the students, the Pay Our Military Act doesn't even mention the Service Academies.

Never said it did.

I agree with your reason's why USMMA is closed, if it were a Military Academy it would probably still be open.

Hopefully they will find a way to re-open soon, the cadets deserve better.

Ah yes... nothing like the "fun" of interdicting and processing hundreds of angry humans, enforcing of U.S. immigration laws... the Cubans and Haitians are having "fun" too.

Little late here, but I was talking about time as a mid/cadet which does consist of fun helicopter and boat rides.

Active duty is a different story.

Helo and boat rides are fun. I do remember in 2003 interdicted maybe 200 less than happy Haitian migrants, returning them to Haiti, and then meeting members of the Haitian coast guard as our MKs fixed one of their boats (which was an old U.S. Coast Guard boat).

My 2/c summer was all fun. But my 3/c and 1/c summers felt a lot like active duty work (minus the better pay and increased responsibilities.)

Since the gov't shutdown lasted longer than the original fall break (at least I think it did), will the midshipmen have a reduced winter/spring break? By how many days?

The Winter break will be the same as originally scheduled. The spring break was eliminated. Or you could say that they took their spring break last week.
