So tomorrow is the vote. How many of you out there think that we will see a shutdown again?

My bet is the answer is yes. However, my bet would have been different if this was an election year because they would not risk ticking off the voters that close to an election. If we do go into a shutdown again, I for one would not vote for any incumbent regardless of my political views come next year.

Heck, I might even start a grassroots campaign to get everybody to write in Mickey Mouse.

Well, I am glad that am working, not only from a paycheck aspect, but as much as I love my DH, I couldn't stand being home with him 24/7.

Politically if they do this I think it is career suicide, Republicans will take the harder hit in my opinion, but the dems will also take a hit.

How is it that they forgot already the anger over the last shutdown 2 years ago? Oh yeah, I forgot it is not an election year so they believe we will forget about it next year when we hit the polls. I bet when Boehner is up for re-election that their opponent will remind voters via commercials that under his watch we shutdown 2x in 3 years.
~ The republicans are handing back control to the dems if they shutdown.

I am not opposed to defunding Planned Parenthood. I see them like I see PBS. They can survive without taxpayer dollars, whereas that local clinic serving the needy can't.
~ Planned Parenthood during the 2014 election cycle spent 16 Million on purchasing commercials.
~~ This would be like my kid coming to me and saying I need you to give me $20 with the idea that they would use it to put gas in the car, only for them to turn around put $5 in gas and go to the movies with the other 15.

However, if it comes down to funding them or shutting down the govt. I would fund them, and than I would have our elected officials come back together the next day and use the next 6-9 months working out how FY18 they will get less funding where both sides can agree upon.
~ 41% of Planned Parenthood budget is govt. funding. I get it. However, I can't and will not accept that they are not a bloated organization. That they themselves cannot find 5 or 10% to cut from their organization...i.e. hiring freezes, or political commercials.

Just saying Planned Parenthood needs to look inside their organization and start working on a budget where they are not 40% reliant on taxpayer dollars.

I'm going through the federal hiring process, so I'd prefer they hold off on a shutdown...

Hoping there isn't one, but skeptical. My battalion has Task Force Ranger Challenge next weekend, and our cadre have already warned us that a shutdown would cancel the competition. Keeping the fingers crossed!

Being married to a GS with a mtg and a kid in college, I prefer they hold off on a shutdown too.

Last time when it was the sequestration, we had time to get our financial house in order for the loss of 1 day a week pay.

I doubt it will last for long, but in this current world many people, especially those GS 7,8,9 live paycheck to paycheck. They will be caught in the black hole because typically they cannot apply for unemployment since they are not officially "laid off".

The positive thing about this if it doesn't pass is we won't be hearing about Donald Trump!
~ Scratch that thought, I am sure there will be soundbites of him still!

I assume that they will create something that does not shut down the govt., but at the same time the budget will not be passed.
~ Scratch that too... I forgot they have not passed a budget for how many years now?

GS 9 living paycheck to paycheck? Just have to be wiser with that money.

I knew a GS7 with USGS... She had a master's degree.... I'm pretty sure she was highly underpaid.

Jake,

That is just the tip of the iceberg.

In the AD world this will create havoc all over the place because there are many GS employees.
~ Very few people realize that the secretary for a Base/Post Commander is a GS. For the AF flying world they have GSs running the simulators or working in the mission planning aspect at each base. Those plumbers, electricians, etc working on a base/post are also typically GS.
~~ Walk around the Pentagon on any given day and you get a big clue within 5 minutes of how many are GSs. Like a military ID their ID hanging from their lanyard lets you know those not in uniform whether they are GS or Contractor.

Upside if you live in No VA or MD, your travel commute time will be greatly reduced!

Sequestration is still in effect...
And it will be for several more years! That was not my point. My point was with the last shutdown due to sequestration, they had time to get their finances in order.
~ It was non-stop on the news cycle. Now it is non-stop The Donald. Nobody is talking about the issue.
~~ I bet if you ask a friend or a family member about a govt shutdown, 75% would say they did not know about it. I doubt they had any idea that this is truly tied to Planned Parenthood funding.

GS 9 living paycheck to paycheck? Just have to be wiser with that money.
How do you do that if you work in the DC area?
~ Oh, I know...you live 60 miles away and slug in every day!

Politically if they do this I think it is career suicide...

If only it were true.

Pima,

I love you like a sister, buuuuuuuuut, are you insane?

Stunts like a willingness to shut down the government, refusal to vote on judicial nominations, demands to take votes on bills with zero chance of passage are not political suicide for that critical mass of Congressmen and Senators. It's their stock in trade.

Oh I agree!

Like I said...I think on FB I am going to start a grassroots campaign that everyone votes for Mickey Mouse next year!

I laugh at many voters.
1. Seriously OH, you keep voting in Boehner with that fake tan?
~ Can you not realize he is VAIN beyond any belief?
2. WV you voted in Byrd when he was in his late 80s/early 90s!
~ Meanwhile many of you took your parents car keys away a decade earlier because you didn't trust them to drive. Yet you trusted an 80 year old to create laws?
3. NJ you voted in Lautenberg until his death in office when he was 90!
4. Democrats said John McCain was too old because he would have been 72...fear of him dieing in office, but they have no problem with Hillary being 68. Funnier that there is the recruit Joe Biden that is now 72.
~ Pot meet kettle..kettle meet pot.
~ If in 08 you said McCain was too old as a reason, than please explain how Hillary and Joe, or Bernie at 74 is not too old.

Point is most people will vote party lines no matter what. They don't research the candidate, all they care about is the R or D behind their name.

I do not vote party. I vote for that candidate that speaks to me. If push came to shove and all things were equal, I would vote Republican over Democrat, but let me say this clearly... I am a pro-life, pro-business, get the govt out of my life voter.
~ I am Catholic
~~ I believe life starts at conception. Period. End of dot. However, I believe as an American it is not my right to enter your bedroom. That is a personal decision.

Yet, if you ask me to pay for what happened in your bedroom with my tax dollars, than you need to expect me to have a voice in the decision.

I think that is the problem here in a way regarding this vote. It seems like a line is drawn in the sand. Fully support us and let us spend the taxpayer dollars as we see fit or the country will be shut down.

Why can't Planned Parenthood and our Congress come to an agreement. Use federal funding only for STD testing, breast/cervical exams, etc. Move the money around. Govt funding is 41% of their budget, taxpayer dollars. 59% is from donations. Let the donations pay for abortions.
~ No flaming, I have not researched enough to see if this is how they operate from a fiscal aspect.

In the end this is ridiculous. I will blame our Congress. I will blame Obama. I will blame Planned Parenthood because they all played CHICKEN impo. They cared more about winning than compromising.

FWIW, If it comes down to Trump vs. Hillary I am voting Hillary. If it comes down to Fiorina vs any Dem., I am voting Fiorina.

Another govt. shut down? Let the great toilet paper scavenger hunt commence! Cadets, prepare to defend against and preform toilet paper incursions! ;)

If Planned Parenthood funding is the only reason for a gov shutdown. Then me the quick deal maker would say that give them 50% of their current funding and call it done. If one side will only settle for 100% of their demands, then that side should be held responsible for the lack of a deal when it is obvious a compromise needs to occur.

Talk to the White House. It's not compromise when it's "whatever I want or I'll veto it."

I didn't even have any idea there was a government shutdown going on. I don't live under a rock. I read the paper everyday and live in a city of 1M people.

billy,
here you go.

Federal agencies will run out of money in a week, but House GOP leaders still haven't outlined a path forward for a stopgap bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set up a Thursday vote on a bill that continues funding federal agencies through early December that also bars taxpayer money for Planned Parenthood. Many conservatives insist any spending bill should block any federal funds for the women's health organization after a series of secretly taped, edited videos released by an anti-abortion group purportedly show officials from the group talking about the sale of fetal body parts. Planned Parenthood denies any illegal activity.

The Senate bill is expected to fail and McConnell is expected to bring up a so-called "clean" spending bill that would continue funding the government while leaving Planned Parenthood's funding alone. Boehner and other House leaders could decide to move that bill, or come up with their own version.

Here's another link

I think it is getting lost in the mix because mainstream media is spending much of their time covering 1 of 3 people. Trump, Hillary and the Pope.

I think Montgomery Burns would be a better candidate than Mickey Mouse. He has had some success in the NYC mayor elections.

Not taking a stand on this issue one way or the other, but just for a clarification; Federal funding for PP is not and has never been a funding source for abortions. The Federal funding is specifically for the things you listed minus abortions. The funding issue has come down to whether tax dollars should be given to the organization as a whole and that's why the debate has become so heated.

I truly hope they can look past this one singular issue and do their jobs.
