Govt shutdown Round 2

Honestly cb,

I am not going to even waste my time reading that link.
1. I think the dailybeast is slanted.
2. None of this will matter until Dec.

I don't know if you you are a govt (GS) employee or not, but we are. We are just moving forward with the idea that come Dec. there will be a shutdown again, saving money just in case.

I am sure this thread or a new one will happen in Dec., but until that time. I see no reason to debate the issue.

Have a great day.

I'm guessing the Defense bill veto today by the President will not help the chances here….

You both should read the link. It is apropos to this entire thread.

What is slanted about reporting Rep. James Jordan, the Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, redirecting DOD funds (via earmark) to the purchase of $120 million of Abrams tanks, produced in his district, over the objection of Gen. Odierno:

Jordan championed the 2011 Budget Control Act that mandated across-the-board federal spending cuts. But Jordan was also instrumental in redirecting nearly $1 billion of the Army’s increasingly stressed budget toward building unnecessary tanks.

“We have long advocated for policies that put our fiscal house in order, and reducing our massive national debt should be one of our nation’s highest priorities,” Jordan and U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, wrote in a January
op-ed. “But we shouldn’t do so by putting our national defense at risk.”

“This year’s appropriation of $120 million in additional funding for the Abrams tank program will go a long way towards doing that,” Jordan and Portman wrote, referring to the Army’s 2015 budget.

But the money Jordan helped funnel into unnecessary tanks wasn’t really “additional” money. The Budget Control Act—which Jordan defended even when other Republicans soured to it—capped Army spending. The money Jordan and other lawmakers appropriated for vehicles the Army didn’t want came from other initiatives the ground combat branch did want, in particular training and realistic war games, which the branch had to scale back owing to a lack of funds.

“We are still having to procure systems we don’t need,” Gen. Raymond Odierno, the Army’s chief of staff, told
Congress in January. “Excess tanks is an example in the Army, hundreds of millions of dollars spent on tanks that we simply don’t have the structure for anymore.”

Sooooo, I rest my case. Jordan is just another showboat, as he demonstrated yesterday, and typical of a critical number of Congressmen and Senators who are either craven or stupid and lead us into this kind of a mess.

I say this as a supporter of the Budget Control Act. I live by the axiom, "a card laid is a card played."

To be fair, the military is not perfect neither. I would say the Army is right about not needing more tanks (although downsizing from Europe and realizing that we might need more tanks in Europe based on what Russia is doing now), but I can't say I agree with the AF's positions on getting rid of A10s, betting the house on F35s, or wanting a new type of long range bomber. I think the miltiary has their fair share of mismanagement. Does the Navy still want more billion dollar submarines? Does the Marines will want a new amphibious vehicle?

All fair points. My reason for posting was to point out the hypocrisy of those who preach fiscal discipline while questioning the conservative bona fides of a Paul Ryan or John Kasich.

As far as the tanks go, DS did his CLCT at Ft. Riley, KS. There were so many Bradleys, Abrams and self-propelled howitzers sitting in a fenced in area, it looked like an airport parking lot on Monday morning.

Hillary will tear Jimmy a new one when the time comes. He'll gain a new appreciation of "search terms"

As a disinterested observer of bloodsport you almost want to see her win the presidency. If she does, in fact, win the Presidency, and is half as vindictive as her detractors suggest, she'll be outsourcing Abrams production to Poland.

She'll lie about the outsourcing…. and we'll just accept it.
