Govt shutdown Round 2

I used to live in the DC area and moved about 2 years ago. I was there for the first shutdown and it was all consuming. I worked for the DoD then and of course it impacted us. Now that I live away from DC, it barely gets a peep on the news. Its funny talking to my friends the difference though. My friends in DC who work for the government are all in prep mode for shutdown. My other friends who work away from the beltway, but for the Federal government in some capacity, haven't received any word or even spoken about it yet.

This is an argument of P!ssing into the Wind. The fact is the Federal Govt should have No involvement in any affairs unless it Threatens the Sovereignty of US.

Today's update...they will now vote on Monday.
The Senate defeated Republican efforts to use a funding extension bill to cut off money to Planned Parenthood, clearing the way for a version without that provision that extends all previous funding through Dec. 11.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has set the first procedural vote on that measure for Monday, two days before the federal fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.

Before Thursday's Senate vote, the White House warned that Obama would veto legislation to continue funding the government if it strips away federal money for Planned Parenthood, setting up the showdown with anti-abortion advocates.

This is my guess...we will be funded through Dec 11, but our President has nothing to lose politically. He can stand his ground. Can was say that our elected officials are playing the game of chicken?

It is going to be interesting how Planned Parenthood is going to attack this issue from a media aspect.
The effort to defund Planned Parenthood is also being waged in states. On Thursday, the Republican-led Wisconsin Assembly approved a bill banning the state from using federal family planning money from going to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that perform abortions.

The bill needs state Senate approval and Governor Scott Walker's signature before becoming law.

I believe the state of NJ has already taken the action Wisconsin is proposing.

Interesting how the two states mentioned by name, Wisconsin and New Jersey, have (had) govenors running for the Republican Prez nomination.

Wow! Went to confirm it on Drudge (just because I would put nothing past USMCGrunt :D) and it's true. I'm totally shocked and this could change things quite a bit although given Boehner sticks around until 10/31 it's not clear it would impact this issue. Maybe he's leaving the speakership sooner?

Don't forget Ohio. Kasich was the only candidate in the debate to make mention of that power that the states have. Ohio cut off state funding for Planned Parenthood and moved on. NY and CT can't and they moved on.

I support Planned Parenthood and it's partial public funding. More important I support the gov't's right to shut off the funding. But, if you can't stop the funding using the rules as they exist, then stop wasting our time with the grandstanding.

This phony shutdown isn't about Planned Parenthood. It's truly a bonfire of the vanities, preening for the most extreme wings of both parties.

I think is a chance of government shutdown went down as Boehner could easily work with Democrats to pass a bipartisan CR. Of course, Democrats could demand more instead of just supporting a clearn CR bill.

The "phony" shutdown is a symbol of our current dysfuntional state of our current political system. In the current system, minority, obstructionists and/or one person (veto threat) wins. Following the rules rational is not acceptable is the rules prevent any changes from happening. 3/5 rules, segregation, poll taxes, same sex marriage, and etc were "the rules as thye exist."

Phony in the sense that, 1)It is unlikely to happen,2)When it has happened, it was never for more than a couple of weeks and those who shut it down NEVER got their way. I could be wrong, but I believe that every federal employee who was furloughed, got paid eventually.

In the end, time and money were wasted on budgetary/financial machinations to make everyone whole. We missed a few USDA and Commerce Dep't news releases. We suffered the trauma of waiting to find out the revision in the artichoke crop production estimate. And who can forget the postponement of the Chincoteague Pony Round-up?

All for nothing!

I think that's the first time I've ever seen the place name Chincoteague on a public forum! :D

It's n the SAF spellcheck database!

Looks like the ponies are safe for now.

From Business Insider:

"Boehner essentially sacrificed his speakership to avoid a shutdown. House Republican aides told Business Insider the plan was to move a "clean" funding bill next week, and conservative members of the Republican caucus left a meeting Friday morning telling reporters they would support the spending bill."

Yes. Phony. Nothing to do with PP.

Get rid of the Bums. (The PP Bill)An excellent example that this is a States issue; and both Wi and NJ showed that Bill where the trash can is located. It should have never been on the Federal Govt agenda. Once the Bums are purged from D.C., the Federal Govt had better start weening itself off all the B.S. spending and concentrate on protecting the Country by following the Constitution that they are sworn to!

You know that it's already too far down the "spend, spend, spend" road, right cga82? We lost the intestinal fortitude to spend wisely long ago. China has $4 trillion in foreign treasuries, including probably 70% in U.S. treasuries. They own our debt. An $18 trillion hole? Who's going to dig out of that? No one. So each year the debt limit has to be increased, and each year we make ourselves more vulnerable to other world powers.

We so use to dialing 9-1-1 whenever we have an issue, we can't even imagine a day when no one is around to save the U.S. from its own poor choices.

Well Pima. If there is a government shutdown, it won't be the Republicans fault. It will be the Presidents. Congress will pass a law funding the government and the President will most likely veto the law, trying to strong-arm Congress. The President is not the ruler of this Nation, we have separation of powers. So stating that if the government shutdowns, the Congress is to blame is idiotic.

I do agree with you though Pima that if the government shutdowns, the voters will be pissed off; because it will be the democrats fault. Expect to see another record year for the Republicans when election comes around just like as it did in 2014 when Senator Cruz filibustered. Sure the filibuster failed, but the tea party movement gained stem because the American people and starting to wake up and live to the values that this Nation was founded upon.
