Hello,
In reviewing the pictures today I noticed that all the guidon carriers were together and that one of guidons had a flag but it was not unfurled.
1.Why were the carriers together in a line?
2. will the current carriers be carrying the guidon for the duration of indoc and is that good?
3. lastly, why was only one guidon with a flag?
My husband and I are guessing that the flags and unfurling must be earned by each company but would like to see if anyone knows.

Thanks for any feedback! :thumb::thumb:

the guidon requires a few extra marching maneuvers, thus extra training is required. that's more than likely what was going on in the pictures.

the guidons will be carrying said guidon for the ENTIRE YEAR. so if they find that to be a good thing then cool. most kids that agree to do that don't know that it's a year long commitment which causes a great deal of bitterness down the road.

the flag is a step that is earned. by getting it on the pole is a sign that the platoon is working together and is making progress as a team. the flag is not unfurled until the platoon has proven themselves as a team and as a unique, strong body within the class. the other platoons will probably receive their flags within the next few days. it's usually pretty close in timing.

Thanks for the feedback. It will be nice to see them all getting flags.

I'm confused

I though it was an honor to be selected as the guidon. Why would it be a think of bitterness?

Because you have to deal with it all year long. Better not dare have that thing taken by another company so you have to guard it constantly.....all freaking year.

Sure, it's a symbol that you are doing well to be selected as the guidon; however, as they will soon learn it is at most times better to blend into the woodwork than to standout good or bad.

Oh Geez,
Do they have to carry it daily in the academic year as well?

Can they put an alarm on it

You guessed it...my son is the one carrying the unfurled flag.

Thanks again for the feebback.

FLKPMOM, I love your sense of humor. If your son has it, my guess is that he'll more than survive!! Put an alarm in it! I LOVED that comment. You go girl!!!

Ok KP 2001 SUPERMODERATOR and the well-seasoned parent/midshipman. I have afew questions for ya!!
Got a phone call from a friend.

No talking is allowed in the rooms. HHMM How long will that last
Is watch for 4 hours every other night for everyone in the company?

I do believe the lesson learned from not knowing what is happening is "how to deal with stress, keeping your wits about yourself and responding appropriately"

Whatever "no talking" rules have been put in place will be scaled back towards the end of Indoc along with the other more stringent regulations (sit in the forward part of your seat at meals etc.). It could be worse ...a lot worse. At VMI and The Citadel they are required to "brace" or "strain", that is, walk in an extremely exaggerated position of attention whenever they are in the barracks area. It is something to see and it lasts until the class is recognized in the spring. Our kids have it comparatively easy and it is half over. As for standing watch, that will continue for as long as they are at the Academy with the levels of responsibility increasing as they become upperclassmen. We can't have those "Coasties" coming over and messing with us can we? Actually standing watch is pretty important. A couple of years ago one of the boat houses caught on fire. Good thing someone was awake.

The no talking in the rooms rule will likely end after Indoc is over. The watches will change after Indoc is over as well. Right now they stand "fire watch" which I don't remember being every other night as they only need 2 per company at a time (unless they changed and put 2 on each of the 3 decks.) Once indoc is over they will have watch around once a month or so which may include various positions around campus. As long as things are still the same they will stand 8 hours of watch on their "day" which will be 4 hours on 8 hours off, and 4 hours on (just like on a ship.) If the watch is during class then they miss class. If it's at night then you have to stay up. Obviously most people love the 8-12 watches and hate the 4-8 watch the most as it makes for a really long day.

Guard that flag

Just spoke with our PC. He has been selected as the other guidon for Company 2 (?squad 2 - 202?). He said his DI's were testing him and hid his flag. Took him most of the day to find it! Bet he'll be more diligent from now on!

He sounded good. I think he is enjoying the position.

The no talking in the rooms will most likely end after Indoc, but they will not be allowed to talk in the Pways (hallways) for quite some time. After Indoc I believe the plebes will have to have their doors open until lights out too. Also, there are a whole lot of other "rules" that the Plebe's will have to live by too. I'm sure you all will find out about them as time goes on :shake:
