Has anyone gotten a NROTC scholarship lately?

I know the feeling of disappointment, it happened to me with AFROTC. Also accepted to my top choice schools which will be difficult financially without the scholarship. I do plan to enroll in AF or NROTC wherever I go, and try for an in school scholarship. I am trying to keep the faith it will work out the way it is supposed too....

At the moment my NROTC status still reads ''No decision has been made on your application" but the part of the status page that reads "Highest Math SAT or ACT equivalent: , Highest Verb SAT or ACT equivalent:" has a blank after the colon. For the past three months it has indeed listed my SAT scores, though they were not my highest or most recent despite the fact I sent my most recent scores to them, so mabe they're just now updating it with my most recent scores? Whatever it is, it's gotten me a little jumpy, wondering if this could mean anything for their final decision on my application.

The exact thing happened to my daughter's status. She retook the ACT in December and improved her math score. That score never showed up. This morning her status is the same but the ACT scores disappeared.

BIZARRE!! Wonder what that is all about???

Same with son's status. At a guess, they are updating the scores with the December results and it's just taking a while for the process to run. The website is very slow today - much slower than usual.

My son's scores disappeared too overnight but we have not had a score change. Plus I talked with a Lt in Fla and he told me no changes could be made to the packets after I think he said Feb.18th, but with the "strangeness" that seems to be this year who knows.

Yesterday my son's status changed to "We are sorry you were not selected for a scholarship. You will receive a letter explaining other options available to you".

He's been accepted to Penn State and plans on attending in the fall but would still like to join their NROTC unit. Any advice?

I have the same as all of you. My scores are gone. Lets hope its a a good sign ! lol

(mom of joshual) My son's status does not reflect scores either. I guess no additional status updates will be posted until Monday...or so they work weekends? LOL!

My son's scores are gone too!! I wanted to ask what may be a sensitive question to those of you who have received indication of non-selection. Are you given any indication as to why in the letter that you receive? My son has a decent GPA with a challenging curriculum and good ACT scores but is weak on extracurricular and leadership. He has also held a job during his junior and senior years. I am worried that his weaknesses will be detrimental and may greatly hurt his chances for a scholarship award. Would anyone want to share their particular experience? Those of us still waiting would be very appreciative.

The letter I recieved stated "The competition for scholarships this year was especially keen. Your evalutation considered factors such as your class standing, high school GPA, courses taken, ACT/SAT scores, references, interviews, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated leadership qualities." No one factor was mentioned in the letter as the real determining factor. Although my qualities were not enough for NROTC, I was awarded an AROTC 4-year scholarship during the January board. So I'm guessing that the NROTC scholarships must be extremely competitive this year.

My daughter was not selected. 30 ACT, 11th percentile of a strong high school, many honors/AP courses, 4 years of XC/Winter Track/Spring Track, NHS, French Club President, many volunteer hours at a local hospital, crazy father (does that count? )

I truly have no idea what caused her non-selection. She is SQ with a senator nom for USNA and is currently waiting (eyesight waiver). My only glimmer was from a post someone made a few days ago regarding space available at some colleges. I wonder if none of my daughter's 5 choices had any spots left?

She chose Norwich, Drexel, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and George Washington. She was accepted to 4 of the 5 (she never completed the GWU app since it was #5 and chosen semi-randomly).

Her app was complete in early October. There was a delay due to one of her recommendations getting lost by someone somewhere, I think she missed a board or two because of it.

I'm not sure if I answered your question..possibly because I don't truly know the answer.

Subdude, Don't think it was lack of space in your daughter's choices. Two of those on her list are on my son's, and actually one is his 1st choice and the other his 2nd, and so far he is still in the "running" for a scholarship.

I don't know, Subdude might be on to something. It will be interesting to see if your son gets a scholarship (and I hope he does! :thumb:), and if it's to school #1 or #2. If it's to school #3, #4 or #5, that might lend weight to Subdude's theory.

Subdude, your daughter looks like an excellent candidate, and my fingers are crossed that she'll receive good news from USNA soon! Keep the faith!

Subdude, Wow! Your daughter sounds like a perfect candidate. I cannot fathom why she was not selected. Can I ask if Pensacola knew of her need for an eyesight waiver? Also, was her chosen major Tier 1 or Tier 2? I can see why you are at a loss for explanation. Best of luck to her as she awaits her decision for USNA. Thank you for candid answer. It is helpful to know as we await out decision.

She was Tier 1 (accepted into Engineering (electrical or general, depending on the school...VT is all general engineering at first).

I thought about the eyesight thing also, since there was a spot on the NROTC app where you have to say what your uncorrected visual acuity is (as in 20/20 or whatever, my D is worse than 20/400 I believe).

I also wonder about how she answered that one question on the application about whether you really really wanted to go to your top choice, or if any of the choices would be OK. I *think* she said the second thing, but I can't be sure.

What would NROTC do, in this competetive year, if a quality NROTC applicant's choices were all filled up? Would they call and let you know, or just mark you "denied" and move on to the next quality candidate that they could place in a school with openings? If they had in fact come back and offered her a different school (not on her list), she probably would have declined, and it would have most likely been too late at that point anyway to apply to a new school.

Gaswimmom, best of luck to your son. I was wondering how you know that he is still "in the running"? Is it solely because you haven't heard a "no" yet (typically how it is, right?), or did you get more info from someone inside? My D's recruiters were less than helpful, they never knew anything..and the brief contact I had with someone in Pensacola to straighten out the missing recommendation was short and to the point with no invitation for further contact.

Subdude, yep, we assume he is still in the running because his status still states no decision made and obviously we havent gotten a letter from them telling us its a no go. I have often wondered in this competitive year if unless you have the 1400+SAT scores, much leadership, etc. if you applied to the academy or another service scholarship program if it may have actually hurt you. I know that would seem to be highly unlikely, but since they are going to be offering fewer scholarships and they want/need a certain % to accept would they be afraid someone would be less likely to accept if they had "other" choices.Obviously no one will ever know the answer but its hard to explain when you see someone with your daughter's stats told no.

It might be interesting, or perhaps we should start a new thread, to ask about the qualifications of those who did receive a NROTC scholarship. My son is fortunate and extremely grateful to have received a scholarship, but while I thought he was a "shoe in," the acceptance took a while.

It would also be interesting to know the qualifications of those who were NOT selected AND when their applications were complete for Board review. There seems to be kids who have exceptional qualifications but may not have been selected because of timing -- either applying late or having to wait for medical waiver, etc. before going to the Board. With only 1000-ish NROTC scholaships being awarded, if the majority were selected during those early Boards, the competition for those remaining slots is greater.

Early applicaiton

Personally I believe timing is very important with all applications including SA's, ROTC and civilian colleges. Granted some will post their apps were in very early and have heard nothing. (like us -USNA app submitted early Sept 09 still waiting) I understand the waiting is hard, but l 100% believe submitting early always offers advantages over waiting to the deadline. In our case submitting during early decision phase to #1 NROTC college was a good decision. Son awarded NROTC scholarship to #1 school (early December) but did not get accepted. In hindsight it really was a "reach" school. The early decision rejection from #1 school gave us plenty of time to transfer scholarship to #2 school without concerns if #2 NROTC was full.

When it comes to SA's/ROTC questions, we always emphasize the importance of submitting as early as possible. As we all know if DODmerb is an issue, submitting early is extremely important.
