Longtime lurker and finally joined; I feel like I already "know" many of the frequent helpful posters. DS is a junior and has been interested in USAFA since junior high so I found this awhile ago to educate myself. We do not have much military background but I have learned a lot from this site and other research. We live in IL Dist 6 and I know that's a competitive area. DS will apply to USAFA and USNA and most likely AFROTC and NROTC as backup plans. Other school choices are TBD at this point. He wants to major in aerospace engineering. Strong GPA, ACT, lots of AP, cross country, Eagle scout, CAP, community service, etc. I have passed on a lot of information that I have learned from reading this forum to him, and know that there are so many talented candidates. All he can do is try his best and see what fate has in store. However, as a very planning orientated mom, I can see it will be a stressful ride. I look forward to learning more and hopefully contributing to the community at some point in the future.

Welcome aboard. Hope all your son's dreams come true! :thumb:

FEIMOM, sometimes the ride is more wild for Mom than for the kid!

congrats to your son and

Strap in!

Welcome FEIMOM.

May I suggest that your DS seek leadership roles in clubs, athletics, work, etc? As a Junior, this would be the right time to seek those opportunities (and earn them).

Thanks

Thanks for the warm welcome.
He is jr asst scoutmaster for his scout troop after a couple of times being Senior Patrol leader and Patrol leader. He just took over as squadron commander for CAP so hopefully those positions, plus Eagle Scout will show his leadership.

Welcome FEIMOM! It is quite a ride for the Mom's that for sure. Best of luck to your son. I would recommend your son look into Boys State this summer as well as NASS and USAFA's summer seminar (Can't remember what they call it)

Summer seminar is one of the best options he could try next summer. Although it is designed to encourage attendees to apply (and doesn't provide an accurate experience for plebe summer or plebe year), it will definitely show each attendee whether or not they are cut out for a service academy. After finishing summer seminar, I knew this was where I wanted to spend my next four years. Good luck to him!
