I'm a high school senior from Texas who has been accepted to the US Military Academy at West Point for the class of 2017. I'm the first person in my family to ever go to West Point (though I do have a cousin at the Naval Academy) and as far as I know the first from my city to ever go there. In the midst of trying to get everything in order for going I figured This would be a good place for advice and information, since I'm very new to all of this and fairly lost.

I doubt you will have heard of it, but I'm from Childress. It's a pretty small town (6,000 people) midway between Amarillo and Wichita Falls.

Alright, good to hear from you. I haven't spent much time in west Texas and haven't ever been to El Paso. It's a pretty long ways from the Panhandle to down there.

I have indeed heard of Childress - my family lives on further south on 83, so we travel that road quite a bit from Oklahoma! they used to have a hardees right on 83 that we ALWAYS stopped at when I was a kid! but, I digress...

anyway, congrats on your acceptance to West Point!! Have you been able to visit?

You found a treasure trove of info on here. best wishes to you!:thumb:

No, I haven't, unfortunately. I won't step foot on the campus anytime before R-Day; it's just too expensive for me to go up there. I've heard it's really something, though, so I'm excited to see it.

Lonestar, our ds has basically decided he wants to be a Navy man, but he is still enthralled with the history and tradition he saw at West Point; we visited a few summers ago. You will enjoy it no doubt. Congrats!!

You'll love the campus Lone Star. ANd I expect it's quite different from Childress. Like much of the Northeast, lush and green in the spring and summer, beautiful colors in the fall, and cold, barren and dreary in the winter. I didn't attend and wasn't in the military, my son doesn't go there, but standing on the parade field where military greats have stood in the past sent chills up my spine. I'm jealous! Good luck with your WP years!!! :thumb:

Yes, I've been warned a few times that it will be a whole different world up there than I'm used to. "Lush and green" doesn't exactly describe my corner of the country! It'll be very interesting to finally get out there and see it this summer. Assuming that I have any time to look up at anything during cadet basic training, of course.

You are correct sir. You will be face down pushing out 20!
