I am the mother of a high school sophomore who has expressed a strong desire to go to USMA. Being a military wife (my soldier is now retired), I have mixed emotions about his interest I am looking to educate myself about the process of applying to the service academies so that I may help him if he does indeed act on his interest. Thanks to all, in advance, for all of your help. Any suggestions?!?

    Welcome! Here are my suggestions…

    1) Read everything you can about the academy including their website, this site, and books. Here is a thread listing some good books to start with: http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=24963&highlight=books

    2) I don’t know what state you are in but most have some kind of informational meetings for kids interested in service academies – go with your son to one of these. My first intro to USMA was going to one of these meetings with my son when he showed interest in applying.

    3) Have your son find out who his field force rep is (do this through the informational meetings or contact USMA admissions). They are there to help candidates with the admissions process.

    4) If your state has a West Point Parents Club get in contact with them too. They can be a good resource for the parents’ perspective of going through this process. This page has contact info to find out about your local parents club: http://www.usma.edu/dcomm/wppc.asp. If you click on the “Email West Point Parents Club Coordinator” you will be in contact with Deb Dalton. She has been a lifesaver for many of us parents.

    Good luck to your son.

Senator Paul had a SA informational meeting in the fall in Bowling Green, KY. AM18 you might want to call and check with the SA Coordinator for scheduling of this year's meeting.
