I have a pre candidate questionnaire on file at the Academy and now I want to start working on the nominations. I have sent in the online VP nomination but that is all I have done so far. How do I get going on the other nominations? And what else do I have to do for the VP nomination? I have checked the congress people's websites and there is no info out yet about nomination for cadets entering in june 2012.

At this point there is probably nothing you can do to complete the actual congressional nominations. For my son, I don't think any of them had info available online before May. Remember, they will want to see all your high school records (GPA, rank, etc.) through your junior year so that isn't available yet I'm assuming. Plus, you want to make sure that you include every activity, leadership position, etc. on your application--even things you do this spring and into the summer. There is no bonus for being the first to submit your application--they will all have a deadline for applications and won't do anything with them until that date. One thing you could start thinking about is who you may want to write letters of recommendations. Some MOC's want a school administrator, some want someone involved with an activity (like a coach), or just an adult that knows you very well. My son's also wanted a letter from a peer. Every MOC does it just a little differently--just be patient and be ready to go once their info is posted online!

Actually, one of my congressmen contacted me asking if I was interested in his nomination. o_O It was interesting. His coordinator for service academy nominations contacted me in September of last year for my application to start this year. Granted I didn't need the nomination from them because I'm military, but I figured that would be helpful for you!

If you're military you can apply right away for a Presidential Nomination for 2016, it can be done by downloading the USAFA Catalog and following the format example and instructions.

Good Luck!

I got the nomination from my commander and my appointment already, but thanks!

Noms are not a rolling process. They have a drop date and will not award any noms until they have reviewed ALL of the candidates. By submitting now you can actually hurt yourself.

Most MOC's have a closing date of late Sept/early Oct. That would mean by submitting now your latest SATs (April, May, June) would not be included, nor any activities that you join early fall.

I understand your excitement, but beware this is not a sprint, it is a marathon. One that takes about a yr just to get an apptmt. You can easily become burnt out.

Aesops fable who won the race? The tortoise or the hare? The tortoise did because they used their time wisely.

Sending in a nom request right now could mean your file looks weaker for the review board against someone else because the other candidate waited to give the best current file.

Pima is correct. You need to go to your MOC's website, and see what "THEIR" requirements are. If they don't have anything on their website, then call their office. They have an individual who's job is to take care of academy applicants. Simply call them and find out their requirements. In our state, a MOC will not even look at an application that is submitted prior to summer. They want your transcripts and grades for your senior year. They have physically sent a letter back to an individual and told them. "Applications for nominations are not open yet. We have discarded your application. Please resubmit during the application period."

There is absolutely nothing you need to do now towards applying for a nomination. Wait till you finish your junior year. Check your MOC's website/requirements. I understand the anxiousness; but part of being in the military, is following rules. Find out what your MOC's rules are, and follow them. Best of luck. Mike....
