Herndon climb

My "Plebe No more" texted me a few minutes after graduation: "I'm a Youngster!" rumor has it his Plebe shoulder boards are on the way home to me as my Youngster flies out to meet his ship.

Also, he was the first to salute a newly commissioned ensign and received a silver dollar. That shall be saved until he graduates so he can pass it on to another Mid.

I just love all of these traditions.

I guess they almost make up for the hassle of mid returning to Baltimore after summer cruise on a certain date...maybe...and needing a flight home on that same date....maybe..If he gets back...maybe....

I decidedto go to Herndon at the last minute. Flight arrived BWI 1130, made it to campus before 1pm. Surprised my Plebe. It was AWESOME!

Funny, that the 2'41" seemed to fly by. Watching that pyramid come tumbling down over and over again. Feeling the joy in their shouts when they finally did it! They were announced as Plebes No More, 4/C midshipman. Very good day.

Was able to have dinner at the waterfront in same restaurant that we dined the night before I-day. DS even ordered the same food! So much fun to see him a year older and many years wiser. I wouldn't have missed it for the world! A whirl of a trip. Les that 24 hours in Annapolis...but it was fantastic. Be proud of your mids!

Also planning to go watch Herndon but wanted to know if the Plebes are granted liberty anytime during that week. I assume so since you had dinner with yours. Any information would be helpful - thanks!!

Not sure if the tentative Commissioning Week 2012 schedule is out yet (you can check on the USNA website), but my Plebe last year had liberty between final exams and Comm Week, then had some mandatory attendence obligations during Comm Week (including on graduation day), but was free to leave the Yard anytime after Herndon. Of course, they had to return to Bancroft at night during that week - no overnights. Technically, they are "Plebes No More" after Sea Trials, but Herndon is the traditional end to their Plebedom, so they pretty much have freedom to come and go as they please during that week.

While guarantees are non-existant in the Navy (and USNA), it's a very safe bet there will be liberty available that week, perhaps even leave.

Something else to take into account during the final exam/Commissioning Week timeframe is that the Mids have to empty out their rooms in Bancroft completely. EVERYTHING has to go -- computer, printer, uniforms, seabags filled with blue rim t-shirts, athletic shorts, and shoes for every occasion, textbooks, and the list goes on. If you are within driving distance, it's just a question of packing up the SUV or minivan (and it WILL be packed to the gills!), but if you live farther away, your Mid should look into either renting a storage locker (perhaps shared with others) or possibly storing items at their sponsor's house over the summer. Either way, a lot of time is spent cleaning out their room, and since parents are not allowed into Bancroft to help carry things to the car, it falls to the Mid and his/her friends to make multiple trips back and forth from Bancroft to the car. Parents can help on the other end.
