Hello,

My daughter is a high school junior and recently returned from the Junior Candidate Visit Weekend. She was so excited and loved what she did for 3 days. She is hoping to get accepted to Summer Seminar next year and also attending their sports camps next season. So ~ whats next until applying for summer seminar on Feb 1, 2012? She is working on LOR and also starting to talk with the local congressman. She is also signed up to take PSAT and PACT this November. Also submitted her athletic form to the academy for her sport. Thanks for any help you can offer!
Go Navy - beat Army!!

The best thing a junior can do is excel academically. Second is doing well athletically and taking on leadership positions.

Thank you for your reply! She remains in the top 10% of her class, 2 varsity sports and many leadership positions since entering high school. Hopefully that will help!

To amplify what 1985 said, her 11th grade math and English teachers will be writting mandatory recommendations/evaluations. Nuf said.

If she's a recruited athlete - or wants to be - she needs to register with the NCAA. Importantly, she needs to follow all of the direction she'll get from the coaching staff.

Thanks osdad! She has filled out the NCAA form already and submitted it to the Navy. She had a informal meeting during CVW to meet with the sports coaches. She was very direct and did ask them what she needed to do to be recruited and they told her so she is working towards that goal!

How does USNA select students for CVWs? Is this something that HS Juniors/Seniors can request, something done my the academy for recruiting, or something else? Thx!

CVW's are offered to highly qualified candidates......seniors who are in the midst of the process of applying. A candidate can request a CVW from their BGO or the Admissions Office. There are some visits for juniors.....I don't know much about those.

One comment on the NCAA deal......prospective student athletes must register on line with NCAA Eligibility Center; send them test scores, etc.

I have a friend that got in on a junior CVW. He applied for STEM but was not accepted. Once USNA gets their names into their database, they somehow get selected. I was never offered a junior CVW- attending hte CVW in Dec though

navyrn: your daughter should be preparing to start taking the SAT and ACT exams in the next couple of months. While these scores are subordinate to transcripts, they are very important to any selection system because they are standard scores with a established reputations, standard grading system, and have a college predictive aspect. With the academies facing reduced class sizes for the next few years, selectivity is going to become more critical. Best wishes to her and her peers

1964BGO: She is taking PSAT in the next few weeks and then taking the SAT and ACT later. Do you suggest sending both testing scores to the academy? I know some kids score better on one vs the other. Can we decide once she gets the scores to send either the SAT or ACT score with her admission packet? She did take the SAT in middle school because she qualified through CTY - John Hopkins University.

The service academies will consider her best scores on either the SAT or the ACT, and go so far as to consider the best scores by subject matter, so she will not be hurt by sending her scores directly. She should consider taking the exams until she is comfortable that she has done as well as she can. My personal take on the situation is that familiarity breeds better scores... personal casual observation. Best wishes to her.
