Today I checked my USMMA application status online, it changed from "On File" to "Hold". What are the chances I will receive an appointment? What are other's experiences with the dreaded "Hold" status? By the way, I'm medically qual'd and my package is complete in its entirety.

This is my second year in a row applying for Kings Point, I am a freshman at Florida Tech majoring in Aerospace Engineering with a 3.87 GPA. Last year I was an alternate. Let's hope that I will be part of the class of 2016!!

We just have to wait. I was given a LOA last year but i didnt get a waiver for my dislocated shoulder. This year I'm on hold. There are less appointments, and more applications than last year. I'm hoping people are appointed elsewhere. Good Luck!

    Re:

Is being a hold candidate better than being an alternate? What is the point of being a hold?

I believe so. we are still competing for admission. We are qualified to be admitted, but there are not enough appointments. i would email admissions and ask where you are at, and what your state quota is.

I don't know if it is still the case, but in my time alternates were chosen even at the last minute. I remember many in indoc with the old Dymo label name tags until the permanent ones were available. A few were very last minute appointees.

Some of the more local guys told me the they got the call that morning. They were told to stay by the phone because as long as someone dropped out the first day, they could bring someone else in.

Great for them except the way they divvied up by companies back then meant the late arrivals were put in band company.

The "hold" status is not bad, but I do understand emotional turmoil it causes.

Many times the USMMA is not a candidate's first choice. They may receive an appointment offer but turn it down for what they believe is a "better deal". When they do, it creates a vacancy.

Several years ago we had a self prep that applied to the USMMA, USNA, and USCGA. He received appointments to all three in the same chronologial order I have listed. He chose the USCGA. He was from Vermont. Two candidates (from Vermont) went to the USMMA and the USNA that year because he turned down their offers.

Please remember that when the appointment offer comes to a candidate they have three options to reply: Yes, No, and Wait (until 1 May).

Being on "hold" means there is hope.
