Way back in my day, we didn't have the internet to check things. Pretty much all communication was by snail mail. I was an alternate, first for CA and I believe something like 14th for the country. I am not sure if they break that down the same way these days, but when I received that letter, it also stated that my chances of attending were "likely". A few days later, I received an invitation to attend a spring orientation (living in CA then, we couldn't afford to go, but I was confused because the invites only went to appointees, not alternates). About two days after that, I got my appointment letter. I then cancelled my alternate plans (to attend a civil engineering college) and prepared for indoc.
I am not so sure that having a chance to check the status every day (or several times an hour, I would imagine) is necessarily a good thing.
If you get it, congratulations. That is the easiest part of the experience. Looking back, having to earn every step made it all worthwhile.
