Does a student receiving a TWE with a "Hold" notification from USMMA reduce or eliminate their chances of getting a Prep School offer?

Have faith

No! I got an offer and I was on hold! keep your fingers crossed

Your welcome! Prep school is really helpful :D Just keep checking in every now and then with your admissions rep and show him that your committed. Also make sure he's aware that if you don't get directly in you're willing to go to prep school.

That's good advice, thank you. I wasn't sure if calling the Admin office was considered "bad form" from their point of view.

New Mexico Military Institute

I'm currently a sponsored USMMA prep at New Mexico Military Institute. That's actually the only prep school for merchant marine. 40 of us got sent here(sponsored). If your son is serious about attending an academy this is a very good stepping stone, sponsored or not. It has a very good self-prep program.

Curious about appointments

Hi, I am wondering if any of the kids at the prep school have heard or received appointment confirmations from the USMMA yet? Or is everyone automatically in?
Thanks

Appointments

Currently, no one who is a sponsored prep has gotten their appointments for USMMA. I signed a contract with KP stating that as long as I take the ACT and the SAT and maintain a cumulative GPA of a 2.2 or higher you will get your appointment. We tend to get ours right after spring break if we have good grades. If you have low grades they wait until mid May to tell you if you got in.

If you think you may be overqualified for prep school but are willing to do whatever it takes to get into kings point, would it be a bad idea to express interest in it to your admissions officer? I would like to inquire about it but I'm a little bit apprehensive because I feel like they might just consider you for prep school over an appointment.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think so! I would say something like: "if I'm not given a direct appointment I just wanted to let you know that I would be willing to go to prep school"

State Maritime College instead of Prep school

Have any of the posters considered the option of attending one of the State Maritime Academies in lieu of attending the prep school.
The State Schools all have regional tuition which is significantly less than out of state tuition. Individuals can apply for and receive $8,000.00 a year under the SIP and start the NROTC classes. In addition you'd have a leg up on your contemporaries should you get into KP as you'd have a year of nautical or marine engineering instruction, STCW and 60 days sea time. Finally if you weren't to get into KP you'd have a year done of college, one sea term done and a year of NROTC and you'd know if it's a career you'd enjoy.

The above is good advice!

To the OP: As previously stated keep hoping for the best. Last year we had a college freshman, self prep who was still on hold when we finished school in mid May. He was dejected but had a good "Plan B" that he was implementing.

Sometime last July I was on this site watching videos of the Plebes at Indoc. and THERE HE WAS! Must have got his appointment at the very last opportunity.

Hoping the best for you!
