Holding off on Preliminary?

Hey All,

I'm debating whether to submit the preliminary or hold off for a bit. Main reason is weight. A year ago I weighed 230. Bring on some motivation, etc. and I'm currently at 200. That said, I'm still 10-15 over USNA Standards. Will this be a major impediment for my prelim? Obviously I'll have to drop it this spring/summer, but can I then update? Don't want to be rejected off the bat and wonder if it'd be better to hold off another few weeks.

Thanks in advance.

Navy15,

First off, congrats on losing 30 pounds! That is seriously impressive and I think speaks volumes about your desire to attend USNA!

In order for anyone to provide advice, they would probably need to know how tall you are and whether you are male or female. Other relevant questions would be what is the extent of your involvement in school sports and how well do you think you can do on the CFA.

If you can provide these answers you will receive much more tailored, accurate advice.

Good Luck & Go Navy

Male, 5'10". Football- Gr. 11, 12. As for CFA, I'm currently a bit behind but anticipate beating the released "average" mark by August.

Update:

Weekly weigh-in today at 198. Any info/advice anyone can toss my way would be much appreciated WRT holding off or submiting the prelim.

Navy15,

I think people are holding off on giving you advise because what you are asking for is more of an opinion than information.

Here is my opinion (just that, nothing less, nothing more):

I don't think 5'10" 198 lbs is that big at all considering that you are a football player. I doubt that this would be an impediment to you becoming an official candidate and getting a candidate number (which is the purpose of the preliminary application). If you were to receive a letter in June saying that you did not receive a candidate number, you could call admissions and see if it was due to weight and if it was, you could update your weight to get a candidate number no problem. Once you get a candidate number, the regular application will ask for height/weight again, and finally, you will be weighed once and for all at your DoDMERB exam.

Another thing to consider is that no matter how early you submit your preliminary application, I don't think (correct me if I’m wrong here everyone) that you will get a candidate number until summer. Thus, if it makes you more comfortable to hold off a little bit longer, I see no harm in doing so.

Good Luck! I hope you get some more responses here... you're asking for opinions and everybody's got one :)
