My son is a basic right now. His liason officer had asked him to request that he be allowed to speak at the local high schools during his Thanksgiving or Christmas break. He told him that if allowed, he would probably leave to come home a day early and/or come back a day later. I have several questions with regard to that. Is that actually something he can do? If so, would he leave to come early and/or come back later? If so, when would he know if that was going to happen. We would like to get plane reservations set before the fares go up, but don't want to jump the gun. Any info would be appreciated.

eh, from what i know, the academy has a program for which you can leave a day early/come back a day late to speak at local high schools or something of the sort. but it's not open to 4 degrees..

since yours is a local request, i doubt it'd go through USAFA, so he'd have to get approval through his chain of command and the squadron. i dunno how much they'd like that, since he'd be missing Commandant's Challenge, a big weekend full of military training,a nd coming back a day late wouldnt be good because he'd miss school. but, anything can happen!

The program that allows that is called the "Grassroots" program. As HNeedle pointed out though, 4 digs are excluded from that.

and for those interested, it's basically you come back from thanksgiving break one day late (miss classes) and in return you visit 3 local high schools and give a presentation on the academy.
