Honor Code--Cheating on Test

The Naval Academy has an Honor CONCEPT instead of an Honor CODE for a reason. It is flexible enough to recognize that sometimes an offense is small enough and that it can stem from a misunderstanding or be as a result of immaturity - and not necessarily a total indictment of the individual's sense of honor. The remediation can serve as a valuable training opportunity. It is not the same as West Point's Honor Code.

Being scared straight can be a powerful lesson.

Having said that, some honor violations are so egregious it transcends any notion of remediation. There are shades.

For instance, wouldn't you agree that there is a difference between not properly footnoting a single passage in a term paper compared to downloading the entire term paper off the internet and trying to pass it off as your own?

Thank you all for your response and your honesty is valued and appreciated!

All of the Mids know who are the "Joes" and who are the "Bros". If a Bro was before the honor board for cheating on her homework, they'd know of other below the radar things shes done. Likewise, if a Joe were there for the same reason there wouldn't be the same list. In other words, a recommendation to dismiss for first time cheating may not tell the whole story.
