Seems most hotel are already booked for the r-day weekend close to West Point. Which town would be the best to look for a room? Thanks

The hotels are booked, but check out the local Bed and Breakfast places. We were able to find one that was quite reasonable and it is still within 10 miles.

Seriously, I just booked mine a couple of days ago. The West Point Motel still had rooms then. $188/night. Very close.

Try a website like booking.com and using the map option to search, that will give you a good idea of distance.

We stayed in Fishkill. There are plenty of chain hotels there and the drive isn't too bad.

If the West Point Motel says booked, call. They are quite accommodating and you cannot beat the location. If you can't find anything to your liking in Highland Falls, there's a Hampton in Central Valley. Many stay in Fishkill and Newburgh as well. I like close, so I will trade luxury for close. Some don't want an older motel--but I don't care.

There's also a Holiday Inn Express in Chester, NY (built within last 4-5 years). That's directly off Route 17, putting you approx25 min away from West Point if the Hampton Inn is full.

The holiday inn express inn ft.. Montgomery is nice and for a special treat...the Thayer on post is great but pricey...

+1 Fishkill, Newburgh courtyard if going on post on and off. Mahwah if coming in from the south the night before.

You'll find something and it will be fine.

We personally did not like staying in Highland falls, preferring surrounding options. Especially when we had our cadet with us, they want to get away.

Does anyone know if you are allowed to take the West Point shuttle from the Newark DoubleTree without signing up for the accommodation package? If not, do most people take a taxi or a bus on R-day?

Most people either 1) take the package and are then transported from the assigned hotel. 2) travel with parents and rent a car. There are a few who do not, but their cab fees are more than car rental. If you are not going to rent a car, do stay in Highland Falls and try to stay at the West Point Motel, otherwise it's too much walking (or Thayer, of course).

The shuttle is specific for that package. It is not a normal thing. Further, your travel is reimbursed to a certain extent. West Point is not going to reimburse a taxi from Newark if they gave you the option to take their bus and you declined. There is no good public transportation heading out of the city that you want to try to take to report on time, especially if you have a 0600 report time. The bus is there for a reason. If you are traveling alone, it is your best option.

Our favorite was The Thayer, but if we couldn't stay there, we stayed in Fishkill, Nanuet, Nyack and White Plains. If you fly into Stewart, the Homewood Suites is nice.
We favored flying into Stewart, if possible. It tends to be more expensive, but we found a few times where it wasn't more than NYC or White Plains. Our second favorite airport was White Plains. Closer to WP than NYC. Smaller airport without the crowds of NYC airports. We avoided the NYC airports as much as possible because, for us, it was more difficult to get to WP. We always wanted to rent a car and driving through NYC was not something we relished.

I just looked right now and the Thayer hotel has days open for the 26th through 28th. Unfortunately, you can't cancel any reservations. Not sure why that is considering they double their prices for "Special Dates". I wouldn't think they'd have a problem filling the hotel then.
