We booked a room at the Homewood Suites for Rday, and a room at the Days Inn for Aday, because they were available, rated well on tripadvisor, reasonably priced, and within an acceptable proximity to WP. However, my wife just read that Newburgh is a sketchy area, and now she is a bit concerned. It looks to me that there are several decent chain hotels in the area, and it would suprise me if it was that bad.

Who knows much about that area, and can anyone give reviews of those two hotels? Any insight would be appreciated.

There are 2 areas in Newburgh. The hotels are in a nice suburban area, lots of restaurants & stores. The sketchy part of Newburgh is not by the airport. You'll be fine with either of those 2 hotels, although if your wife is on the Moms page, there is a file/list she can access with hotels and parents' recommendations/opinions.

The West Point Motel has been remodeled, is close to USMA, and isn't that expensive.

Just know that the hotels within a 25-50 mile radius of WP will increase their prices for every event / weekend there is something going on at WP, including R-day/A-day and football weekends.

It's $180 plust taxes. We called. The hotels in Newburg are around $130. Worth the drive.

For Rday it's totally worth the drive because you'll see him for 90 seconds. But for Aday, you may want to be closer, so he can spend every second with you. Go for Rday, and if you feel you want to be closer, book then at WP Motel for Aday. Either way, congrats to your son and enjoy yiur time at USMA!

Have stayed at both mentioned hotels and both are excellent and were are preferred hotels in the area. Homewood Suites is perfect for A-day and I would recommend as the added space was great. When cadet wanted to sleep...the rest of family had the living area to hang out and we didn't feel like we were disturbing the sleep-deprived. Rules were stricter for A-day privileges when my grad attended and she honestly only wanted to catch up on sleep, eat, visit with the friends we brought along and take long hot soaks in tub.

Have a Navy buddy whose son just got an appointment to West Point. Do they do a private Oath of Office Ceremony on R-Day, after the group ceremony, so he could put on a uniform and swear in his son? He is also unfamiliar with A-day...what is it and does anyone know the dates for 2016? I also told him about this forum.

Official oath of office is part of the in processing in Thayer, done by the SJA, and the parade in the afternoon is the ceremonial one. Once a parent says goodbye in the morning, the only way they are talking to their DS/DD that day is if they quit.

A-Day = Acceptance Day = new cadets are accepted into the corps and become a cadet. It's in August, date is floating around on one of these threads/available to parents of accepted candidates.

In 2008 when I had a newly accepted CC and there was no facebook, I also worried about choosing the "right" hotel. What is "right" is what works for your style, your budget, and your family. Take this off your worry plate. It's going to be fine, no matter if you're down the street or a 20-30 minute drive. I prefer being as close as possible for most events, so I stay at the WP motel. However, space and proximity to restaurants was important for 2019's A day, so we chose a hotel in Fishkill. We can only tell you what we've done and what worked/didn't work...the important thing is being there for your DS and enjoying the time together. Read reviews online to be sure the hotel is clean/etc...and enjoy the days. Plebe year will fly by (as my DS says, "Thank God!")

Thank you. Just looking for a bit of insight, and it has been helpful. Mostly wanted to dispell any concern about that area of Newburg being rough or crime ridden.

Kid gets appointed to WP, and all the sudden we are booking rooms for R-day, A-day, Army Navy game, another home football game. And needing to clear schedules. My stuff is going nuts.

I'm not overly cheap, but the hotels can add up, and if there is a $50 per night difference, and you are there for three nights......

This is kind of hectic, but fun at the same time.

@brovol I checked on the mom's fb page (which your dw should join). I didn't read anything negative abt Homewood Suites, that's why I said you should stay there Rday. I read anything near the airport is safe. But I just want to add, I don't like Newburg. Where you are staying is fine, but other areas are sketchy.

In a few months you'll be booking rooms for PPW, graduation, more football games, etc. It's crazy fun.

Good source for dates is the Thayer Hotel website. Obviously the hotel isn't official but they have a huge financial interest in getting the dates right.
