Hotels walking distance from Naval Academy

PT/Mumsyto3:

No - Hotwire only tells you the number of stars (Lowes was a 4) and that's its "Nearby" DTA. I just took a chance figuring if I had to drive a short distance I was no worse off than if I stayed up near the highway.

Also, once you agree to the price - which is before you see the name of the hotel - you agree to pay.

Not my favorite way to book but for one night I thought it worth the gamble.

Hmmm.... the highest "star rating" they show now is 3 1/2, $126/night. Have we missed the great deal on Loew's, or do we keep checking back? I've never booked through Hotwire before either, so it's a puzzle!

We stayed at the Loew's for I-Day last year. A word of caution: the breakfast buffet was a MESS: broken toaster, no dishes, no this, no that. Just be prepared for something like that and build in extra time so you don't get stressed out.

On the plus side they ended up having a shuttle that morning which we ended up taking, making up a bit of time from our breakfast disaster :)

We are at the Loews for I-day as well.

What I have found is that the 4* hotels on hotwire are with the Loews or the Westin. If there are no 4*'s then I'm not sure what the 3.5*'s are. You can go to betterbidding to see if they know.

You can keep checking back - as more rooms may come available. I've booked a room at a cheaper hotel by the mall (that could be canceled, ie via expedia) and then kept checking back on hotwire - if one becomes available - I would book it and then cancel the first one :)

Just booked my "house" for PPW - the house I wanted through stayannapolis.com was booked, so I went through the vbro site - there are a bunch of houses in annpolis that are available.

We also booked a house for PPW. It's a little more money but DS wanted to have have some home cooked meals and a room to crash in. We'll also be able to bring our dog.

Historic Inns

I saw someone posted that they had a bad experience at Historic Inns (HI), sorry to hear that but wanted to post our experiences.

We have two at the Academy - a firstie and a plebe. We first used HI when our firstie came up for her CVW. She had to travel by herself and her report time meant that she had to fly in the night before. I wanted something in walking distance for her and booked there. Since then we have stayed there for 2 I-Days, 2 PPWs, Herndon, and several other "just because" trips (watch them play their sports, etc.). We have never had a bad experience. It is more expensive but it has always been clean and comfortable and CONVENIENT! When we stay there our kids will sometimes just walk on over to take a nap or just watch tv - it's so close that it's easy for them to go back and forth.

For commissioning week we booked a house right next to the Yard through Annapolis Accommodations - they were great. The homeowner even let us visit the house when we were up in January so we could get a better sense of it.

Has anyone stayed at the Country Inn & Suites in Annapolis. I got a wonderful rate, but then I saw some of the reviews and they were a little iffy......

Thanks,
Suzie

We stayed at Country Inns & Suites when we toured Annapolis in May 2009. It was fine. Smallish breakfast room but adequate food. Good beds. We liked it enough that we are staying there for I-Day. Still undecided for PPW. It's across from the "back" side of the Mall.

Janet

Thanks Janet!!

I was also looking at the Springhill Suites too, but they don't have a shuttle. I'm just going there because my son was accepted to STEM and my other son is doing a sport camp.

Do you know where you could park in downtown Annapolis, or is a headache to even try!!!

Thanks again,
Suzie

Parking in DTA

operative word : early (as in "get there early to find a spot")

Parking can and usually is a real pain around city dock(practically impossible on weekends)....we often park inside Gate 1 at the VC (or midstore) and stroll back into DTA when the weather is nice or find a residential side street spot near our eating or shopping destination. There are a few public parking garages in DTA also....ask the hotel desk for a map that has them highlighted.

Historic Inns of Annapolis are very nice and were not too pricy if booked online ahead of time...they also have guaranteed valet parking...it is definitly walking distance from all three HIOA locations.

not mentioned

historic inns of annapolis: ask for their governor calvert house property in addition to being most convenient it is also the nicest.

also, loews, olcallaghan and westin all use "e-cruiser" free electric shuttles that run throughout the day in addition to their regular van type shuttles that tend to run on a scheduled or an on-call basis.

be sure to book for commisioning week during your i-day visit.

parking meters are strictly enforced, bring quarters ($1.00/hour, 2 hours maximum per space)

if you are not staying right in town, try to park at the city operated Hillman Garage on Duke of Gloucester St. pays for itself easily in savings on parking tickets.

good luck and Go Navy!!!

Thanks for the reminder about the shuttles. We have found it is an easy and pleasant walk from the farthest of the hotels, the Westin. During PPW, there was a regular parade of parents heading down to USNA every morning, then back with plebes in tow, then back in the evening to drop off plebe, then back to hotel again. It is 1.5 miles from Westin to Bancroft Hall. Closer for Loew's and O'Callaghans.

They will sell tote bags in the mid store with the Class of 2014's names all on them. Get a couple. Some of them had waterproof bottom. Some were all canvas. We use ours a lot. Taking it along to haul something to sit on, cameras, bottled waters to Herndon climb.

Speaking of mid store shopping......you may want to go there the day before I-Day. They have t-shirts with all the members of the class of 2014 names, in addition to the tote bags. They ran out of "Smalls" last year fairly early on. I'm thinking the tote bags were not available at I-Day for some reason, but were there at PPW. Anyway, the mid store is crammed on I-Day. If you can be in town the day before, best to do your shopping then.

So you can get on base the day before? or is the mid-store in town?

You can walk onto the Yard anytime gate one is open by showing a picture ID. If you are facing the main enterance to Bancroft the Mid Store is to the left down the walkway. You need your temporary card to make purchases before and during I-Day.

This is a great thread for those who are about to visit USNA for CVW. It took me a while to find this and a ton of great accommodation options.

Lee: I just re-read this thread and you are right, it is a lot of good information. Worthy of getting to the front of the line again.

Wanted to expound a bit on the hotels, hotwire, etc. For Herndon this spring, I looked over all the travel sites. Most of them listed the four star hotels (which equates to Loew's, Westin, O'Callaghan's in DTA) at 149. I have used hotwire successfully in the past, so went there last. Westin for 89. Grabbed that. Then, when I got there, they charged me 69 a night!

The farthest of the Downtown Annapolis Hotels is the Westin, which is 1.5 miles from T-Court (in front of the dorm, Bancroft Hall). It is an easy, pleasant walk. Loew's and O'C are closer. Yes, it is mysterious booking on hotwire as you do not know the hotel name, but a 4 star will be one of these. And no farther than 1.5 miles. Shuttles available from hotels and of course, cab service too. The hotels up near the mall, etc that require a drive are ok too. Parking is a pain. Garage in DTA. I always try to get within walking distance.

Those of you going for CVW, while the kiddos are there, walk around and be sure to have breakfast at Chick and Ruth's and be there for the pledge of allegiance at 8:30 am.

We do not have a trip planned at this time and just thinking about all of this makes me want to get something going! Miss that mid a lot!

thanks for the great info jennyp!

When do you find out which hotel you booked after securing on hotwire?

Right after you commit, they tell you which hotel it is..............

I've had some great success bidding/ booking Annapolis Hotels using Priceline (Name your own price option).....many times landing the Loews, Historic Inns and Westin for less than a $75/night bid......unfortunately this weekend ( 2/C Parents' Weekend along with several USNA Class Reunions) I wasn't as lucky.....ended up using Hotwire to snag 2 of the last few vacant hotel rooms in Annapolis out on Riva Road......but still under $75/night including breakfast and free parking (which neither Loews or Westin offer):thumb:
