Fortunately for my son, we live in a very Pro-Military state. And there's an Air Force base in our town. So military and Air Force is quite respected. Even by the jokers who use to give the B.S. line of; "We support the troops, but we don't support the decision for them to be in the middle east". That's like saying you support the players for a certain football team, but you don't support the coach. ANYWAY; as I mentioned earlier, we've had a lot of the silly questions from people who didn't know the academy was a legitimate university.
But a lot of people who really didn't understand, took notice at my son's senior class awards night. They gave out pretty much every award to whatever seniors were receiving them. E.g. athletics, gpa, attendance, and anything else they could think of. The last part was bringing up every senior who had received a college scholarship. Now our state university has a pretty good scholarship program for in-state students. Different dollar amounts depending on your gpa. So there were obviously quite a few students going to our State U. But then we had the others. One to Michigan State, one to Tulane, One to Princeton, One to USC, etc... And they mentioned each scholarship. Some were partials and some full rides. They only mentioned dollar amounts. When they mentioned my son going to the Air Force Academy; and then mentioned a scholarship value of $350,000+ (Can't remember the exact amount); you could hear a lot of oooooos, and ahhhhhhhs. And afterwards during the reception, there was definitely a different attitude among some of those who didn't understand earlier.
But this doesn't really help the OP when comparing different service academies. If you really have a lot of people giving you these stupid comments and asking why; and you really want the easy way out so you don't have to deal with it; just tell them you want to be a pilot and fly C-5's or F-15. Tell them if you wanted to fly a chopper or drive a tank, you'd have gone to West Point. And if you wanted to get sea sick, you would have joined the Navy or Coast Guard or Merchant Marines. They don't have to know the real reasons. And personally; if they're going to ask such judgmental questions with absolutely no respect, then they don't deserve the truth. later... mike....
