DS is entering USMA Class of 2015 and I'm making plans for attending R-Day. Can we bring along his adult sister to the activities, or is R-Day only for parents and NCs?

Alternatively, are there aspects of R-Day that are only for parents yet we could still bring his sister along for the day and there would be other activities during those parent-only times?

    Thanks much,
    RLTW

Pretty much as many as you can afford to bring along.

You'll just need to provide your own transportation, lodging, and food.

When we attended, we saw everything ranging from the sole new appointee there on their own; just a parent or two; an entire immediate family; and entire clans!.

After the appointee reports, the families move on to other activities for the remainder of the day until the oath is administered at the end of the day. You are free to roam around much of West Point. There are activities in Ike Hall staffed by parent clubs from around the country.

We went all over West Point, and only were told to stay away from the cadet areas. If you parked yourself outside Grant Hall, you got a chance to view the streams of cadets leaving Thayer on their way to the cadet area.

The only real restricted event was the briefing in Washington Hall; at Ike Hall tickets were issued to parents/guardians to show up for the briefing at a particular time. Not sure if attendance was limited to only a few family members.

I encourage you to join prospective-net which does have quite a bit of information for the incoming class. Also consider joining the West Point Parents Facebook group, where Deb Dalton from the West Point Public Affairs Office, posts a lot of useful "official" information.

For the Class of 2014, we parents have our own discussion group to address questions, share information, and most important, share photos from Beast and other events as our cadets continue their journey.

PM me if any parents would like info on starting their own Class of 2015 parents group.

Please keep in mind that information posted on prospect-net is not official and may not be correct for this year, as things can and do change. Despite the name of the organization running those list serves (west-point.org), they are not affiliated with West Point in any offical capacity. While they can be a good place to "meet" others, the only place to get correct information is on the sites run by the Public Affairs office by Deb Dalton. Deb is one of the most accessible people you will ever have contact with! In addition to the facebook page, she also administers a twitter account, flickr photo page, the parents page on the Academy's website, and is rolling out an official list-serve for parents this spring. You can find all these at:

Glad you pointed this out, Momof2cadets! And the same goes for when prospect-net automatically rolls you over into plebe-net; West Point does NOT do things the same way year after year. As you said so well, Deb has the CURRENT official information for West Point and she is so helpful.

Thanks for putting together all these links, which I should have included in my original response.

And ditto the caution regarding prospective-net and plebe-net.

Deb Dalton is an outstanding person and an excellent resource, and the various links above will get you to the official information. I encourage you to check out all the links and use the ones you are most comfortable with.

I understand that there will be even more useful things coming from Deb in the coming weeks and months!

Even before all the above links were active, Deb has been watching out for us! My cadet is 2012; I remember being in a panic over a situation prior to Rday. I posted on plebe-net, as I had no place else to turn (I thought). Deb picked up the phone and called me and let me know what needed to be done. For future classes, let's hope and pray she never gets any crazy ideas about retiring! :thumb:

    Deb :)

Deb's assistance is available throughout your new cadet's years. She helped us with arrangements regarding attendance at a funeral and with contact information on another issue. She answers emails at ungodly early morning hours, and is always one of the friendliest faces at WP. If she doesn't have the answer, she'll find it and respond quickly. It is so reassuring to have accurate "inside" information when you really need it!

Totally agree with all comments regarding Deb's accuracy, accessibility, and going the extra mile.

Not sure if she's single. If so, can we introduce her to Larry Mullen?
