I have read a lot about the time spent at sea as a student but I am also interested in what life is like after graduation. Can anyone let me know how much time a professional sailor spends at sea once working in the maritime industry. How long are the typical cruises and how much leave time is given in between cruises?

Thank You

It all depends on what segment of the industry you work in. It is all different for Inland, Offshore, tugs, MSC or deep sea. Almost everyone sails 6-9 months out of the year but how it is broken up differs. Inland, tugs and Offshore (oil and gas industry) are typically anywhere from 7 to 28 day hitches, deep sea is usually 60-90 days.

Shipping out of a union hall gives you the flexibility to take as much time off between jobs as your pocket book allows. Everyone else is on a set schedule of pretty much equal time or 2 for 1.

Depends, I used to sail six to 9 monthes a year. I sailed more when I was single and on a good run.
