How will a government shutdown affect ROTC?

DS (AROTC) has received his stipend and book money, but their battalion FTX was just cancelled. (It was scheduled for this weekend)

Cancelled? Or delayed with a date TBD? Just curious.

DS received stipend and has NG drill this weekend - its still a go. Perhaps since this unit deploys early Spring 2014 they are given a different priority? Or since this is a state guard and not national reserves?? No news on upcoming FTX or other AROTC training dates.

Wishing all the cadets/families impacted by the 13 closing BNs good luck! Tough choices and a path changer for sure....

Units mobilizing are allow to drill this weekend. NG or Reserve units mobilizing are considered supporting the war effort. If not, drills are cancelled. All normal training events should be cancelled. My unit already rescheduled our drill to the third week of October. It could get pushed back to later if the shutdown consists.

Just curious, where does your Battalion hold their FTX.

Per DS all normal at his AROTC unit. Contracted cadets still getting paid in full and on time. FTX was completed 2 weeks ago but had to be moved from FT. Carson due to flooding. They ended up staying in the Boulder/Golden area. DS coming home for the weekend as he did not want to be on campus for the destruction of the CU Buffs by the #2 Oregon ducks. :frown:

I see on the other forums where there is talk of cloing the SA's until the govt' shutdown is over. My questions is... Are the funds that are currently paying for stipends and books already budgeted for and somehow off the chopping block? Very thankful but it seems strange that our ROTC kids are still getting paid and even new ones contracted daily, (adding to the outlay of funds), while the option of closing SA's is on the table. Just trying to wrap my head around the whole picture. Thanks.

@kinnem...Just got in touch with DS he said they are unsure if it will be rescheduled
@Jcleppe...It was supposed to be "at a place called Kingsbury".

ftx

same for DS $, but ftx cancelled this weekend. btw, AROTC.

$$

DS received his stipend for 10/1, however word just came down no stipend for the 15th until shutdown is resolved. FTX is still is a go for now, they usually don't have it until early Nov.

I think the discussed SA shutdowns is related to the fact that many of the instructors and staff are civilians. They are considered non-essential and are furloughed. For the time being the Army/AF/Navy personnel are picking up the load of their civilian counterparts. They can probably only do this for so long before they are unable to keep up.

Agreed as usual.

The Shutdown does not mean things like stipends and tuition is not paid, it just means that there may not be the personell to process the payments on time. Since the last round of stipends were paid before the shutdown only time will tell if the next payment will be made on time.

As far as some battalions having to cancel their FTX, I would assume that has to do with where they do the FTX. Some battalions will use Army facilities which may mean they have to cancel due to the civilian workers being sent home. My son's battalion does their FTX in the hills near school so the shutdown won't effect them as much.

My son did tell me that the MS1 class now has no instructor since he is a contractor not AD Military. My son is teaching the class next week, then they think one of the other instructors will step in. What a mess for everyone, military and civilians alike.

Tough times. Glad to see your son is stepping up! :thumb:

As a non teaching graduate student I was called upon to teach a few sessions of an instrumentation class. I had aced the class when I took it. I quickly realized that I did not understand the material well enough to convey it to someone else. I studied much more to teach a session than I ever did in that class and as a result of teaching those sessions I learned the material MUCH better.

Good luck to your son.

Article on Navy ROTC

This is interesting.

In addition to the guidelines about dealing with the press, Navy ROTC also received word Wednesday that all their community outreach events would be canceled or postponed until after the shutdown.

“This includes all external speaking engagements, color guard/ drill support (to include color guard participation at university and college sporting events), and command supported volunteer events,” Comer wrote Wednesday. “Even if events are at no cost to the government, or have already been approved, any external event where you or your students are official representatives of the Navy or Marine Corps shall be cancelled, declined or postponed until the end of the government shutdown.”

Government shutdown - it looks more and more like our DSs and DDs will have to remember Private Winger's (Movie Stripes) immortal words when dealing with this situation. Stepping up like Jcleppe's DS#2(He knows these words).

Cut it out! Cut it out! Cut it out! The hell's the matter with you?! Stupid! We're all very different people. We're not Watusi. We're not Spartans. We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! But there's no animal that's more faithful, that's more loyal, more loveable than the mutt. Who saw Old Yeller? Who cried when Old Yeller got shot at the end? [raises his hand] Nobody cried when Old Yeller got shot? I'm sure. [hands are reluctantly raised] I cried my eyes out. [even more hands go up] So we're all dogfaces. We're all very, very different, but there is one thing that we all have in common: we were all stupid enough to enlist in the Army. We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us! We're soldiers, but we're American soldiers! We've been kickin' ass for 200 years! We're 10 and 1! Now we don't have to worry about whether or not we practiced. We don't have to worry about whether Captain Stillman wants to have us hung. All we have to do is to be the great American fighting soldier that is inside each one of us. Now do what I do, and say what I say. And make me proud. Fall in!

This is so stupid. Let's make everyone feel all possible pain when the activity or location costs the government absolutely nothing. Crap like this can come from nowhere but the very top. And I don't mean the very top of the military, but the very top. (and I seldom use a )

EDIT: Just fired off emails to my Congresswoman and Senator Kay Hagan on this. I'm furious, and my kid isn't even in the color guard any more. There is no need for this nonsense. Of interest is the fact that Sen. Richard Burr has shutdown his email contact page so I guess I'll have to get on the phone to this yellow bellied guy. Of course none of my emails will have any effect but I like to let these idiots know that we're watching.

EDIT 2: Fired one off to the Prez too. No reason he should escape my wrath!
