I was wondering how you find out whether you are in our not? Is there something on the portal that will tell you?

On this site you'll see the letters BFE and TWE thrown around a lot. I myself just recently realized that they stand for big fat envelope and thin white envelope. That's how you'll know if you are accepted or not. By the middle of April, you should receive one of these parcels. The big fat one is the acceptance letter, and the thin white one is the rejection letter.

You are only notified by mail? I thought maybe something showed up on your portal telling you. Also when do they look at applications that have just recently been completed?

In most cases the academy will email your nominating party and let them know that you were selected. At that point the office has the option to either call you and tell you themselves, or let you wait to get the BWE in the mail. They are not informed who was denied.

Also when do they look at applications that have just recently been completed?

USNA has rolling admissions, meaning they've already started looking at applications and notifying some candidates of appointments. Depending on how competitive you are, and whether or not you have a Principal nomination, or an LOA, you may hear anytime between now and May, although the bulk of appointments should go out in February and March.
