Humongous State U v. Small Liberal Arts SMC?

This is my DS's opinion - so someone from TAMU may offer a different perspective. When he went to Spend a Night with the Corps he found it just as intense and as structured as SSA and visits to VMI. BUT, when he went to observe classes he found that the instructors were not sympathetic to the Corps or the additional duties that they had. "When I left the corps area I suddenly went from Academy to civilian and the civilians didn't appreciate what the cadets were doing." So for him, SA or VMI or Citadel were far more viable.

Well, just to cap this discussion: DS and I went to Aggie Eagle weekend last week and enjoyed it very much. The Corps there did an excellent job of showing us TAMU and the Corps. He has been admitted and visited all the SMCs (except North Georgia, and Virginia Tech, where he did not apply). A very tough decision, but he has opted to attend VMI in the Fall as it seems like the best fit for him personally. And VMI just gave him a nice Institute Scholar scholarship to boot. Good luck to all in their decisions.

Congrats, pennak!! VMI is gonna get an outstanding cadet. It is totally a relief to see where our DS/DDs settle in!! My DS reached his decision this week, too!

Thanks very much, patentesq. I agree, it is a *big* relief. What did your DS decide?

Pennak,
Congratulations.

When you visited TAMU and the Corps was there anything that made you or your son uncomfortable?
TAMU is one of the schools my son is considering. I am not sure I am crazy about the idea of the Corps being imbedded in a much larger civilian university but we haven't visited yet.

I'm sending a pm as I don't want to offend any aggies. The school was fine just huge. Certainly being a cadet at tamu is a big deal My DS however thought that the aggie corps was less disciplined and less rigorous than the corps at vmi. For example no one steals at vmi. The honor code there is very much the real deal At vmi I have seen a box full of unattended cash sitting in a common area associated with the sale of the student newspaper In contrast at tamu one cadet told me that theft within the corps was not a problem as long you were careful to lock up your stuff! Other minor stuff like at tamu the cadet rooms were a mess. No room inspections. Big contrast with vmi which was neat as can be Even freshmen were allowed to leave every weekend at tamu --not so at vmi. My kid was looking for something different he wants the total immersion experience Of course he wants to be marine force recon too. Your kid may looking for something different altogether I strongly advise a visit to tamu.
