3 Questions about the i-day checklist

    1) No socks? T-shirts and underwear are on the list, but not socks. Are there officially issued socks that go with the boots?

    2) Just be sure, white compression shorts are ok, correct (as long as they are the shorter ones)?

    3) Any recommendations for the black eye glass strap? (Brand, size, material).

    Thanks in advance.

My DD was issued socks. Unless it's on your packing list, you don't need to bring anything extra. In fact, you'll be fine if all you bring is what is listed on the packing list.

DD brought compression shorts. Hers were black but I believe the white ones are ok. In fact, DD told me compression shorts are encouraged.

Eye glasses will be issued for BCT. At some point after Acceptance (I believe), you will be allowed to wear your own glasses. As for the strap - I leave that for a cadet who wears glasses. :)

Just plain black for the strap, doesn't matter the brand. For the compression shorts, white, black, grey are all ok. For underwear, if you are a girl you can bring whatever underwear you want, they don't check, and you can bring more too. Having "cute" underwear made DD happy and she likes to change hers a lot so she had way more than the 12 recommended pairs. Socks are issued.

You do not need to worry about making sure the underwear is white for male or female. As a guy or gal, you will need at least one pair that is white or skin tone for parade pants, but other than that boxers are completely acceptable. Nobody will confiscate underwear that is not white. Bring what you want for training and after. Socks if you want to bring them, but during BCT you will wear issued socks to be standardized.

Your cadre won't check your underwear, but it is expected that you follow the instructions given to you. Goodwill can be rough on your clothes, and there are rules for a reason.
As for compression shorts, white isn't always an option, and that's totally understandable. Black, dark blue and grey are also acceptable colors. Just don't come in with neon ones because these are out of regs in the PT uniform.

Of course, if you do bring neon, the cadre will - in the most gentlest of terms - remind you that you are out of regs and suggest that you change clothes:

"Excuse me, Basic. Those shorts are out of regs. Go ahead and change. We'll patiently wait for you." o_O

Oh that's not going to be a happy group of folks waiting...they'll probably look tired to the cadre and need a rest...

    Front leaning rest...

The list states 12 pairs of underwear, should the compression shorts be some of the 12 or can they be in addition to the 12?

This makes me laugh because my mother, the always caring grandmother told my DD to ask for pure cotton with anti shock heels. My DD smiled and nodded.

Bring as many pairs as you want! Honestly, all that matters is you have at least 12. There were definitely times during basic when laundry got backed up and you had to recycle underwear. In Jack's, pretty much everyone wore compression shorts all the time, just because it's a dirty environment and they're easier. I'd recommend 12+ pairs of underwear, and 5+ pairs of compression shorts. You'll be given 3 black compression shorts during inprocessing. The color 100% does not matter, I would go with black or white or dark blue if you want to be extra safe, but honestly, not ONCE will the cadre ever ask you what color underwear you are wearing.

    Underwear....

Child: MOM! I have no clean underwear in my drawer. I have to leave in ten minutes!
    Mom: So turn yours inside-out.

Ahh, motherhood. Stuff you thought you'd NEVER say. As in EVER.

The institution, not the individual, sets the standard. We expect that these rules will be followed (because we expect the very best from our appointees), regardless of whether or not it is visible.

Personally, I was unable to find enough white sports bras and compression shorts for the brand I felt very comfortable wearing all day long (comfort does matter). In addition, I ran out of clean undergarments multiple times and had to wash them in my sink at night. While we absolutely expect the standard set to be upheld, don't neglect practicality either when deciding to bring more then the prescribed amount or your comfort.

Of course! I remember the struggle. That's why I made the note about compression shorts. I'm just asking that the best effort is made to stick to the game plan. :)

I don't know if this is the same at the academy, but the reg in AFROTC from AFI 36-2903 is that compression shorts have to be black or dark blue. Just an FYI.

Short, mid and full length solid black or dark blue form fitting sportswear (i.e. spandex, lycra or elastic) may be worn and visible under both the PTU/IPTU and optional IPTU running shorts. -- AFI 36-2903 paragraph 7.1.5.2

If you do decide to go with white compression shorts, just remember nothing remains white after Jacks! That red doesn't seem to come out, even with bleach! My son's packing list specified white underwear, and that is what he brought. I always wondered why white, when everything seems to come back stained red from jacks. I don't know of anything that can get that stain out!

Also, fyi. Goodwill boils the cloths. They don't use any type of deodorizer etc.. This means that cloths can develop an interesting odor. They are clean, just not take a deep breath fa-breeze fresh clean. As a freshman you don't have access to the washing machines, and you have to use Goodwill or the machines a your sponsor's house. So once BCT is over and you are established in your squadrons, get a hold of a large box of fabric softener sheets and keep a sheet in all your clothing drawers, closet and inside your shoes. Change the sheets every week to 2 weeks. This can help with the odor.
